The story starts off with the beautiful tenacious strong willed heroine Madeline getting savagely beaten within an inch of her life by her stepbrother Kenneth who is upset that Madeline won’t marry a neighboring laird and the guy of his choosing. Unexpectedly the handsome, strong, bellowing larger than life hero Alexander or Alex makes a visit to Kenneth attempting to find thieves stealing off his land and calls on him to figure out this problem, Kenneth is also a neighboring laird of Alex’s too. Alexander sees the filthy state of Kenneth’s keep but decides to stay one night and finds a distressing situation of Madeline getting beaten so decides to rescue her from Kenneth’s cruelty.
I adored the fact that Alexander rescues Madeline from her repeated beatings but throughout reading the past history of Madeline’s physical abuse I kept wondering why Kenneth is beating her repeatedly. Sometimes it seemed unnecessary and how could someone a woman no less handle such abuse without even a grimace, crying out or whimper of protest? Plus when Madeline gets branded without even a batting of the eye I just kept thinking the woman has super powers to get abused like this and can stand pretty much anything physically. Even animals when they are branded if you don’t tie them up will still howl with the branding. Madeline is very strong in that regard but emotionally why did she deal with Alex’s constant blustering? The guy always seemed to be yelling one way or another at everyone his family, his staff and Madeline that I seriously think why even keep reading all he seems to do is bellow at everyone? Maybe he needs to get some sexual release by jumping into an icy loch or playing with himself. Even after they get married the paranormal aspect of Madeline’s dead mother showing up on their wedding night kind of freaked me out like for some reason it’s okay to witness dead people watching them having sex is pretty normal and for some reason Madeline was okay with it so maybe it was my problem then.
I was really surprised to find out the plot twist of Kenneth being in love with Niles too okay I can deal with that so he loves the guy is beating Madeline for compensation what I figured. Okay if you love the guy so much why not just take him then? So Madeline ruined your life its okay to have some big homosexual love affair with the guy? There is nothing wrong with that and I myself would not be opposed to reading about it either. I assumed maybe Kenneth was embarrassed with the idea of being intimate with another guy plus the guy he had feelings for was obviously bisexual and Kenneth couldn’t deal with that to some degree. Yes he wanted Madeline and his lover Niles to be together but maybe because he was really into that. I think that should have been explained somewhere in the book to both Niles “hey look I love you man I would like you to stop having sex with so many women because I want us to be together just you and me man not you boning all the women around well except for Madeline you could just have sex with her and we could get finally get it on let’s make love because I think I could make this relationship work.” Also telling Madeline “hey look I was having a deep sexual relationship with Niles that is why I was beating you but also since I wanted you and Niles to be together it could just be us three sharing a bed okay? Since you killed him I can’t live without him who am I supposed to have sex with now while Niles is having sex with you?” than at least I would have felt better about him beating the ever living daylights out of the heroine. I felt this aspect of the homosexual relationship between Kenneth and Niles then add the weird aspect of Madeline being thrown into the mix was never discussed when it should have been so this kind of left me hanging I felt. Why did I keep reading because of Ms. Montclair’s other characters Brodie, Robbie and Brenna who I just instantly loved and their relationship to each other. I liked the silly little squabbling they had and how close they were to each other. How they would pick on Alexander a few times making me laugh at their antics but still showing him their support throughout the book. At times I wanted Brodie and Madeline to end up together because he did not yell, had affection for Madeline and seemed like such a sweet guy. Also Ms. Montclair is able to not only develop her hero and heroine but her side characters are amazingly fully developed. So that is why I rated the book four stars and will read more from Ms. Montclair.
The negatives were few, but potent. It seemed almost all the major characters suffer from hysterics of some kind, to the point of a reader's eyes rolling--our stereotypical hero included. Very shallow world building and character development throughout. There is some inconsistency in the major characters, as in a leap is made and there seems no real justification for it in the story.
Again, not a bad story...but not one on my repeat read list. Giving four stars instead of a "meh" three because for the most part, the editing was good--and we all know how intolerable bad editing can be.

I also found a lot of the book repetitive. We know what Maddie's fears are. We know what Alex feels for her and will take care of her. We didn't need to be constantly reminded.
Whilst we knew that Kenneth had disappeared and weren't sure whether he had died or was just hiding there was no suspense there at all. No edge of your seat will he or won't he reappear to cause more trouble. It was almost as though the author had completely forgotten about him.
Having said all that I really did like Alex's character. She managed to make him a strong, determined leader of his people but with a gentle side when it came to the people he loves. And the image of all those muscles certainly brought a smile to my face. A lot.
Yes I read the book to the end but I am glad I had downloaded it for free. I certainly would not pay £3.99 for each of the other books in the series.

At times story was harrowing, the pain suffered by the heroine was awful, her innocence stolen by evil men, the violence they inflicted on her, yet they never broke her spirit. Maddie was a great character, loved her innocence and the inner strength she possessed.
Loved how Alexander, the hero, saved her, his protectiveness towards her and ultimately his love for her. Maddie made his brain mush and he couldn't understand why. He cared for her, but couldn't figure out how she had him so twisted inside out.
This book is a strong start to this series, don't miss it!
