About the Author

Melissa grew up surrounded by dragons, fearsome creatures, and damsels in distress from the wonderful world of make believe. She soon found her ideas on paper, littering her desk with world maps and character biographies. Study hall was used not for homework but for writing. Although she pursued a career in theater, the written word never left her. Melissa now leads a full life with her husband and children (five amazingly adorable clones to be exact), though she still finds time to write in her "spare time." Oh, my heart. Debut author Melissa MacKinnon takes readers on a breathtaking journey where passion and danger posi-freaking-lutely explode. Yep, I said it. They 'SPLODE! Brynn and Marek can't even exchange glances without sparks flying, so when they get close you can count on your e-reader getting a little too hot to handle. MacKinnon's voice is unfailing, and her ability to convey these characters will have you so invested in the story that when you hit the end you're going to have a big sad when you blink your way back to reality and realize they're not real. Only...they ARE real. They MUST be, for they stay with you long after the book ends, and not just the main characters, but the secondaries as well. Marek's brothers-in-arms are perhaps the best deadpan humorists in all of historical fiction, with unparalleled comedic timing and flawless delivery. And when you're not laughing or shaking your head at their antics, you'll be positively swooning at the heat between the leads. Every bit of it is organic. It simmers and builds until you just can't breathe for the want of that moment when the characters give in, and then ERMAGERD. Amazing. *fans self* This is a long book, taking place in three parts, but it flies. To read it is to become immersed in this world that, while at times bitterly heartbreaking, is one from which you just cannot bear to walk away. And that is perhaps the greatest legacy of this author's debut: once you've read it, you've truly experienced it. So get in there. Be prepared to be glued to it until the very end (grab a tissue - you're going to need it) and to carry this heartfelt story with you long after you close the last page. With a book this good, you couldn't hope for a happier ending than that.

Setting was well done. I loved the world building. And the characters in this book are wonderful. They have brains and courage and resilience. My complaint is how little of the book they spend TOGETHER. For a romance, I wanted there to be more actual romance. To see the characters fall in love. Some people complained about the language, and meh. I barely even noticed that. So, take those with a grain of salt if you will.

All in all, this was a very good story, and I can see room for improvement, but as is I still enjoyed reading it.

Engaging start and plot line. Liked the physical tension between the two star-crossed lovers. Very interesting plot developments and twists. There were some dark elements: sexual harassment here, violence there, and minimal swears. The ending is what leaves me delivering 3 stars. I thought I was reading a historical fiction read when 85% through the book mystical fantasy elements appear. Spoiler alert: drinking magic potion and incantations that bring a person to life, visions of the dead reappearing to haunt, white forest haunted. There wasn't a transition or themes early on that indicated we were in a fantasy land. Not consistent. I really like fantasy reads as well. This book could decide which is was suppose to be and it was quite confusing to end in a world different from the picture painted in the beginning.

I absolutely loved this book. Melissa MacKinnon is a fantastic writer. So many times while reading a book I lose track of who's who or find myself skimming past all the long boring descriptive detail to get to the story plot; Not so with this one. From start to finish this book flowed smoothly and the characters were so engaging I couldn't put it down. I could picture every scene as though it was played out right in front of me. It is not your average, corny, predictable romance but a perfect blend of history, romance and fantasy. I highly recommend this book. I have pre-ordered her next book The Archer's Daughter and can't wait to read it.

This was a fun, great read. Likable characters, humor, and a story that was easy to follow. My only complaint is I wanted to see the downfall of the girl who originally pushed Brynn down the steps . I'm glad Julian told her in his last moments. The added mysticism was a bonus . Well written overall, and thought author pulled story together nicely! :)
