About the Author

Maxim Jakubowski is a novelist and editor. A United Kingdom native, he opened the world-famous Murder One bookshop in London in 1988. He compiles two acclaimed annual series for the Mammoth list, Best New Erotica and Best British Crime. He is a recipient of the Anthony and Karel awards, a frequent TV and radio broadcaster, crime columnist for the Guardian newspaper, and Literary Director of London's Crime Scene Festival.

He lives in London, United Kingdom.

These stories were adequate but nothing has really remained with me as great. And nothing was really fun. Some of the writing definitely seemed sophomoric in places to me…but I’m no critic perhaps it just wasn’t to my taste. Adequate…not great. Three stars.

The only thing this is good for is starting a fire. Who ever came up with the idea of moving Holmes into the current is ludicrous and an insult to Sir Auther Conan Doyle. If your intent is to influence new readers a book at a time, this is not the book.

I had high hopes for this, as I loved a previous compilation edited by Maxim Jakubowski: 'The Adventures of Moriarty'.

'The Return of Sherlock Holmes' starts off well enough, and several of the stories are pretty good, but some are, to be blunt, terrible - in plot, writing and execution. Many try to be too clever, modernising Holmes, or twisting the relationship with Watson to a point where our favourite protagonists are almost unrecognisable. There are many far better pastiches and homages to Holmes out there, so I'd recommend you skip this one and get the Moriarty volume instead!

After a reasonable start the stories deteriorate rapidly. Holmes using an iPhone in a story no better written than a child's school essay. Holmes and Watson sent to a nudist colony. And worse. No sign of any discrimination in editing. I suspect this was the dross from his previous compilation. No pleasure in reading it I fear. Fourteen quid down the drain.
