4.0 out of 5 stars NIV 2020 Version Study Bible. Colorful, BUT...
Reviewed in Canada on March 15, 2021
In my search for a new study Bible, I first turned to the NIV because it is what I have used for many years now. The goatskin cover is AMAZING. It is so soft in the hand. However, after a few days of looking over it, I was still cold to this particular Bible and I could not quite put my finger on it. I went to my men’s group the following week and one of my friends uses the ESV study Bible. After thumbing through it, I knew I wanted an ESV instead. It had the warmth and elegance I desire in a Bible. So I returned this one and got an ESV study Bible.
Back to the things that left me cold on this NIV study.
After reading the preface on text translation for the 2020 version, I wouldn’t call it a “RED” flag for me. Rather I am simply not a fan of how they have chosen to represent certain terminology for modern language trends. I will let you read the preface yourself so that you can decide for yourself. This review is focused on build and quality. Not translation.
The layout just is not for me. If you are a fan of upbeat, colorful modern text layouts. Then you will LOVE this Bible. If you are like me, more of a traditionalist, then the presentation lacks the warmth and elegance of what I feel a Bible should look like. It feels more like a bright tablet layout in my honest opinion.
As I said in the beginning. There really isn’t anything wrong with this Bible. It is very well done. Great binding, beautiful goatskin cover, decent ribbons. It simply is just is not my choice of how I like to read the Word of God. So if you are a grey hair like me, this probably is not the Bible for you. The younger generation I believe will Love what Zondervan has done though.
