I loved the way the author wrote this book. He first challenges you with somewhat simple riddles, such as what us good when it is broken (an egg) or what runs but never walks? (A river) The author shows how we need to think out of the box to solve these. I particularly loved his longer riddles that require lateral thinking--such as describing a man who takes an elevator to a lower floor and then walks up the stairs but when he is with someone else in the elevator he takes it to the floor above (The answer is that the man is short and finger can't press a higher button when he is alone in the elevator). His chapter on "Mathematical Mazes" was also quite fascinating. For example, the author asks if there are only three positive numbers that reach the same sum whether they are either multiplied or added together, what are they? (The answer is 1,2, and 3) I found myself being entertained by these many riddles and will use this book as a reference when I feel I need the challenger or want to challenge someone else. Highly recommended book for helping us think differently about things.

Their power is in overpowering the reader in a way that makes the reader see that they should have known the answer (or in a joke, the punch line). This book of riddles does that. I would have preferred fewer words in the setup and tighter writing, but the riddles worked for me. As in, I didn't get the "hole" sponge thing and had to cheat to read the answer. There were lots of riddles I didn't get. Good book to share with kids and grandkids.
