4.0 out of 5 stars Ring Outdoor contact sensor
By rebel_rk on October 28, 2021
Received and installed on my gate today. It’s outside and a good 50 feet from the nearest Ring range extender. Through multiple walls and through a two car garage and to be honest, I was expecting to have to get another range extender to get it to work. But to my surprise, the app recognized the device and reported on events immediately. Now to the negative part, the two brackets to hold the magnet and the ZWave sensor are very flaky. I’d be surprised if either the magnet or the sensor isn’t on the ground in the morning. I’m highly invested in the ring alarm ecosystem and was pleasantly surprised when I heard this being released. As this is day one, I’ll update positively or negatively if things change in the days to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works Great! So Glad They Added Outdoor Sensors!
By Meezus on November 27, 2021
Long-time Ring user, sensors on every door/window, motion sensor in the garage, water sensors throughout the house, Ring Doorbell Pro and a handful of indoor Ring cameras.

I also have a home automation system and I've tried outdoor Z-Wave sensors with it in the past, but they've never worked well or for long.

When I saw Ring was releasing an outdoor sensor, I was so happy! Got it right when it was released and installed it on the main gate to the backyard.

This sensor is a bit larger/bulkier than the standard indoor sensors (that's not a complaint, just mentioning it). It appears to be fully water-tight, but we'll see how it holds-up in the Florida weather.

Its mounting plates have both two-sided tape on them, like the indoor sensors, but also have screw holes + include screws, which is what I used to attach it to the gate.

Depending on how your gate is installed, be mindful of the 'swing' and positioning of the sensor. The first spot I went for wouldn't allow the gate to fully open without knocking the sensor off, but I found a good spot for it and it works fine.

It's about 30-40 feet from the main Ring Hub inside and the alerts push right away.

It also instantly (as do all Ring sensors) added to Alexa, so I've created routines to announce 'The gate has been opened/closed' on the various Echo Dots/Shows throughout the house.

I'd definitely recommend it if you're looking for an outdoor sensor on gates/fences and thus far, it works perfectly.

I'd love if Ring released a 'trip beam' sensor, but other than that, the Ring system just works flawlessly.

If any issues arise @ weather/stability, I'll update this review.

*** UPDATE *** -- 12/2/2021 -- I believe I've found an issue with the outdoor sensors. The sensor is constantly reporting a Tamper alert. If you remove the sensor from its mount, you'll see there's a small, rubber 'nub' that is supposed to be pushed in by the mount when it's in place. That mount, does not appear to be sufficiently pressing the tamper button in. If I push-in the button myself, the Tamper alert clears. Let go, it reports Tamper. So the Tamper button on the sensor itself works, but it appears the little 'rise' on the plastic mount that's supposed to hold this in, isn't big enough to actually keep the Tamper button depressed. I haven't contacted Ring Support yet, but I'll do so and post any updates as necessary.

Reducing rating from five stars to four stars for the time being, as the open/close alerts still function.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my shed
By GPK on November 8, 2021
Installed the Ring Outdoor Contact sensor on the door to my shed. I was concerned the distance between the sensor and alarm would be too far away to communicate but at ~200ft away from the closest range extender and have no issue at all with performance. Open and close alerts come in quickly and I'm happy to now know if someone is able to access my shed w/o my permission. I did have to get a little creative on mounting the sensor (picture #1). Sliding the sensor onto the bracket would have been impossible due to the way my shed door is made but by only using 1 screw on the bracket I'm able to swing the bracket up, slide the sensor on, and then slide it back down into place. Using one screw feels plenty strong and keeps the sensor in place when opening and closing the door.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works well as a garage sensor, even in coldest of Canadian winters!
Reviewed in Canada on December 17, 2021
We installed this to monitor our garage overhead door, as seen in the photo (which may be hard to understand). The smaller half of the sensor, on the left, is rotated 1/4 turn so it would fit, and is attached to the door. The part on the right is on the frame.

The smaller white contact sensors aren’t rated for cold winter temperatures, so we bought this one.

This configuration has been working perfectly so far (for 9 weeks and counting) and it works WAY better than our old alarm system sensor which used an accelerometer and was slow or didn’t recognize when garage opened/closed at all.

It has been below -30C (-22F) for days and was down to -38C (-36F) overnight these past few days. About as cold as it can get! I was concerned this sensor may fail because of the temperature rating. This sensor isn’t directly outside but it must be -18C (0F) inside our garage. The sensor has been working A-OK, even when the overhead door is open and the sensor is more exposed to the frigid cold.

As a result, I would fully recommend this for cold climates, if used like we are doing (in a garage for an overhead door).

If using the sensor strictly outdoors, fully exposed, like in a gate or shed in the winter, I might be more wary. It is technically only rated down to -20C (-4F).

For climates that are warmer year-round, I feel this sensor would be a terrific purchase.

-----

Other notes:

- For use on a garage door, make sure all snow is cleared under the door. With just a bit of caked snow under the garage door, the sensor wouldn’t register as closed.

- Keep in mind this sensor is larger than the white indoor ones. If you are using in a narrow space you may want to measure carefully first.

- We also found the tamper sensor a bit finicky. Once the baseplate behind the large half of the sensor was attached, and we slid the unit back together again, it would still register tampered. We hadn't screwed the baseplate on overly tight, but we had to loosen it until a delicate threshold where the sensor would register as being properly assembled again. It sounds like others have had similar problems with the assembly of this product.
