Wow. You know, there was a time when I hated the character Damian more than one should hate a fictional anti-hero.
The writers at DC have done some impressive work with him. Snyder was the turning point for me. And he convinced me to read the Tomasi Batman & Robin title which had some more touching scenes than I'd ever expected. And now we have the traditional "redemption arc" story. Only, I don't think this works without having read the other titles. So, I benefited A LOT from having the history before picking up this volume.
Goliath felt too gimmicky right up until he wasn't. And when it all comes together at the end of the volume...seriously amazing work. And knowing this character is just now turning 13 for the Rebirth new stories. But for this story...I seriously commend Patrick Gleason on his writing. The art was hit or miss for me sometimes, but that's a personal thing. I think the story, the dialogue, the writing was something special.
So much so...I'll keep an eye out for Gleason's name in the future almost as much as I'll keep an eye out for Volume Two of this title.
