Fun movie, but someone has to say it...
Verified purchase
Fun movie, definitely good enough to have on while you're doing other stuff, but someone has to say it...was the real Jack Black just not available that day? Should I point out the obvious? They're trying to recreate his character from School of Rock. Actor tries and fails to use the same inflection and style. What choice did he have? That's how they wrote the character. If you liked School of Rock (and I did), but let's say you just saw it a few days ago (and I did), then you will probably...hmm...you will probably put this movie on while you're doing other stuff and think it's cute. In the back of your head will be the nagging feeling that your mom just served you an English muffin pizza and served it to you in a takeout box. If one day all you want is a handful of carbs, it'll taste good enough, but you'll still feel weird about the fact that your mom served it to you in a takeout box. You dig?

Rainn Wilson shines in his own movie but couldn't the music have been better?
Verified purchase
The Rocker is a movie about the generation gap between young and old being brought together by Rock N Roll. Rainn Wilson always deserved to have a movie of his own and this was it. He joins the teen band ADD to return to his glory days which were robbed from him by his old band. He plays out all the Rock star stereotypes to which his band mates are dumbfounded. For instance he trashes hotel rooms while everyone else is just sitting around. They go into other Rock tropes like the manager trying to change the band’s line-up. Wilson is great in his part and gets plenty of laughs. My one main complaint is that ADD’s music was college rock/alternative. They couldn’t make something with more of an edge?

Better than average,....

Predictable, a bit cheesy in spots (especially Gad, and the SNL dorks, ugh!) but a fun, upbeat, and hilariously goofy movie nonetheless...worth the time if you find Adam Sandler movies funny too. Jane Lynch, Christina Applegate, and Jeff Garlin are particularly good in the supporting cast.

The Rocker - Proving Dreams Still Can Come True Anyway

The reviews I read on this product before purchasing it said it was a really funny movie, and it is! From the start, you can tell something is up and it's no holds barred hilarity from many cleverly (or not so cleverly) disguised stars of SNL! The plot is reminiscent of "School of Rock", but takes the situation in a different direction, while amplifying the differences between past and present musical styles. The movie features the parenting team of Jane Lynch and Jeff Garlin (from "Sleepover") and Christina Applegate really out of character as a somewhat overprotective mom. The gags are sometimes cliche, but not always, and fairly enjoyable, except for the pocket of puke scene (blech). Otherwise...

Rainn Wilson is very charming and endearing (not nearly as creepy as Dwight Schrute, his character from "The Office") as he portrays an aging 80's rocker who was NEARLY famous before being axed from his band at the height of their popularity. Twenty years later, he is unexpectedly given another chance to rock and make a run for the top with his nephew and his band! Will they succeed? Will uncle get axed again? Can the young hipster set roll with an older, hard rock drummer? It's a fun ride, so why not get the DVD and find out?

Definitely a hard pass next time lol

An absolute disappointment. Wilson is usually hilarious in everything..... decent in this one, but not at the level he really could be. The story was meh and the movie as a whole is just meh. Definitely not worth the high price Amazon charged for the rental.... maybe worth watching if on sale.

Was surprisingly pleasant and funny

Did not have high expectations but my husband wanted to laugh. It was very funny and we both enjoyed it. Ending was very contrived and cheesy, but my husband wasn't as bothered by it as I was. Rainn Wilson is a very fearless comedian.

Before I Knew Dwight Shcrute, I Knew Phish!

Long before I knew about The Office, I know I know, I saw this gem. I enjoy the comedic value this movie has to offer, and if you're anything like me you will be laughing from start to finish, and then move on to the gag reels and keep it going. Were you a rocker in your prime, and wish you would have made it big? Watch this movie. Do you like laugh after laugh, clenching your stomach because it hurts comedy? Watch this! Seriously, you can read my review and go from there. Rent it, if anything. I know you will not be disappointed. It shows a naked man's butt in it, about the only thing you have to be weary about.
