Truth be told, I am still sorting out my thoughts on this book while reading at the next book in the series. The overriding theme is a Jungian Hero's Journey for the son of a minor court official in the maelstrom of unrest overtaking his world...a series of more or less interlocking fiefdoms, some ruled benevolently, some not so much. As in this genre, a malignant SOMETHING has launched a beginning round and the shock troops, golem-like, have won.
There are healing wizards who are not warriors...yah, you guessed it, our young friend is both healer and warrior--so we have two of the four Jungian archetypes...Warrior and Shaman...at play. And there is a young lady warrior...so we have the Lover archetype hovering on the horizon.
So, you ask is this book really worth 4 stars? YEP. The writing is good, the story arc is nicely played out, the characters are well-defined and being nicely developed...for DATA types they got the emotion chips in nicely...and we forget that underneath the flesh is machinate--until someone gets cleaved and the metallic indoskeleton is reveled. I can not find fault with the craftsmanship.
I will not downgrade a book/series/author simply because I am not gronking with the storyline or grooving with the genetic/forging of the denizens of the world created. It took a while for most folks to really tune into Middle Earth, Foundation, the Na'vi...you get my drift.
Should you get the book and read it? Answer these three questions in order and in the affirmative--- Do you like genre-bending? Do you like to see new takes on what might be called old recipes? Are you good at immersion reading (putting everything on hold and just getting into the book)? If you just gave me three YES answers--get it and probably the sequels. If you gave two YES and one NO, get it and after reading it, consider the sequels. Anything else...got back to your romance novels where nobody dies and people flutter around and bosoms heave a lot and get sweaty or glow or whatever.
There ya be..
The book had a very interesting, and unique, fantasy and science fiction concept, but I do not think I will finish this book. :(
On the positive side, this book could easily become an anime screenplay and the characters popular at a future anime-con!!!
This book is very light and very quick, but at the same time conveys a depth that is engaging. I read it in almost one setting and literally missed my flight as a result of poor time management on my part.
I look forward to reading the rest of the series and other books by this new author.
Anyway, it is rather unusual post-civilization (maybe, sort of - I hope that'll be explained in the second volume) story, in which humans actually do have a clear and evident difference from the rest of the biosphere. Which obviously raises some interesting questions, that some of them are trying to answer.
Eagerly starting reading the second book.

The author appears to have some reasonable writing skill and the books do "work" (for values of "work"...), but this is not an Adults book - very much a YA book.
