That book is Royals for me.
It's been a looooong time since I've read a story cover to cover in one sitting and found myself truly reluctant to put it down, but Rachel Hawkins made it so easy for me to lose myself in her comedic, dramatic and romantic teen novel, one that follows Daisy Winters as she's thrust into the royal life after her older sister Eleanor gets engaged to Alex, the Prince of Scotland. It's when media attention turns to Daisy - and not in the good way - that she's brought to Scotland for the summer to be kept under the watchful eye of The Palace.
What Daisy wasn't anticipating for was how different these royals were behind closed doors, most especially The Royal Wreckers - who consist of Prince Sebastian and his four friends, one of whom is our male lead, Miles - who end up causing her presence to be more problematic than was wanted.
If Royals were a movie, it'd not only be the new The Princess Diaries, but it'd be up there with my fav British rom-com of all time: Angus, Thongs & Perfect Snogging. It was a joyous, light-hearted, and an amazingly fast-paced, fun and funny and a fluffy read, one with unforgettable characters you can easily relate to - characters who're real and vulnerable and they make their mistakes, but they're strong enough to never let those mistakes bring them down - a memorable romance and an unpredictably entertaining storyline.
It is the ultimate teen read... and THAT is why I'm rating this book four stars.
Honestly? I kept forgetting that this was a YA Contemporary, and the last time I read a book in that genre was back in 2017, so I truly feel like I would've loved this story more if I'd read it when I was a teenager, because teenage-me would've adored everything about this story. Teenage-me would've found no flaws whatsoever. But adult-me wanted more; more of a focus on the relationship between Daisy and Eleanor as siblings (as they have their problems), and more of a growth in the love interest between Miles and Daisy (since to me, there wasn't a lot of it before the ending). There's also the fact that I felt like this book ended way too abruptly for my taste, and had a few matters - mainly concerning the royal siblings - left unresolved.
But (as I'll always state in reviews like these) those are just my own opinions and feelings towards this book, and something not everyone will agree with. So, putting those aside, I really enjoyed Royals and found it to be a story that both brought and kept a smile to my face, and has a few shocking moments here and there that kept me all the more hooked. The writing was light yet captivating, and the plot itself was unique and kept me consumed until the very end; I'd definitely recommend Royals to those looking for a quick and enjoyable YA royal read.
I loved Daisy. I loved her parents. I loved that the book went in a different direction romantically than I expected when I picked it up. I loved that when an issue came up, it wasn't, like, dwelled upon so that the story took an angsty turn - it stayed light. I loved that I got smacked with a twist that I most definitely did not see coming. And on a superficial note: I love the new cover; I think the new printing is beautiful and I am obsessed.
There were a couple of story points that I wish had been expanded upon; but overall, I had a great time reading this.
Fun, witty, zero angst, and a nice romantic relationship that seemed to blossom naturally.
A royal read that was perfectly balanced with drama and swoon. I need book two now!! I love Miles.
