I was drawn to this work by its promise of a memoir structured around a breakfast staple's venture into the world beyond the pan and the plate. I was not disappointed. The itinerant pancake is disarmingly pluckish, taunting people to try to catch him, all the while knowing their bipedal anatomy -- involving, as it does, the repetitive co-flexing of opposing musculature groupings -- is no match for his uncannily self-propelled circularity.
Some books celebrate the human condition; others commiserate with us. This book does neither, a fact which should come as no surprise when it is realized that the author listed on the cover is a corporation and not a natural person. As might be expected, themes of dominance and submission permeate every page. More disturbing, the writing reflects an astonishingly dismal world-view according to which there seems to be only one very clear rule: that those who try to escape the binds of utilitarian determinism will be captured and eaten alive. "Abandon hope, all ye who seek freedom in this world," the book seems to be saying, "We made you what you are today, we have the power to destroy you, and we will only enjoy it all that much more if you resist."
A part of me wanted to give this book 5 stars because it is the only book I can remember from before kindergarten. Another part of me wanted to give it 0 stars because of its nihilistic overtone. In the end, I feel I must give it 4 stars for sentimental reasons, docking one star chiefly because it failed to include a reference to sweet potatoes.
