An orphan boy of mixed race finds family with the newly arrived white village doctor in Hawaii. The boy can run like the wind, and begins bringing Doc's medicine to coffee pickers throughout the mountainous region. On an errand, the medicine runner meets the daughter of the plantation owner and a forbidden, young love blossoms like the white "Kona Snow" of the surrounding coffee trees.

Nice scenery, but bad acting and boring plot
Verified purchase
I really liked the Hawaiian scenery in this movie and how clean and wholesome it was. That being said, the plot moved VERY slowly and was extremely predictable. Also trying to make medical procedures romantic is just weird. Grace had no character development other than that she liked a boy her age (Joe) and hated the man she was supposed to marry twice her age. But she was resigned to her fate until Joe managed to run very fast and beat the fiancé to the wedding. While Grace was the flattest of the characters, all the other characters were pretty flat too. There was also a lot of death, but the death had no lasting impact on the character development of the survivors aside from 1 sad scene for each person that died. This movie was so boring, so slow, so unrealistic, its not worth your time. Hawaii is pretty, but there are better ways to see the scenery wasting 2 hours on a boring movie. I enjoy romantic movies, but you either need to develop the characters, create an intriguing plot or make it funny. This movie was none of these.

Beautiful movie! One of the best in a long time!

The storyline was a traditional one with some unexpected surprises. The acting was excellent! Matt Dillon definitely superb and the stand out among them. As others said, the film was "slow" but it was intentional and part of the movies beauty. If the movie had been faster pace, it would have lost it's air of honor and charm. As far as "family friendly", I would say there are a few things for families to be aware of. There is an abusive character in this film and some very violent scenes in my opinion. Not much blood but definitely vindictive, murderous actions and alcoholism. There is a hint of rebellion but the family in the movie is only looking out for their financial interests and not the child's welfare. I wouldn't recommend this film for anyone under the age of 13 personally unless they are used to movies with some violence. I do tend to be more on the cautious side then most. Overall, I found the movie to be one of the most beautifully shot, acted, and directed in years with a feeling of an old classic woven in.

"Disrespect" so evident
Verified purchase
The contrast of the beauty of Hawaii, a place where I used to live, with the horrible disrespect shown of other cultures, of so-called half breeds or racism in today's language, disrespect of a young boys medical skills, and an alcoholic Doctor who is very incompetent disrespecting everyone around him, self-centered and manipulative and murderous in many ways-if he was a real doctor he would know that you always attend the most severe life-threatening injury first before the obvious. People without a medical background get can taken in by charlatans such as this, reminds me of some of the incompetence I see in current day hospitals. I was totally engrossed in the film, I did not think it moved slowly, it was necessary in my opinion for the viewer to develop emotional feelings for each and every character in order to be absorbed in the plot and relate to the marvelous ending.

Good Movie
Verified purchase
I really enjoyed and would highly recommend watching this movie. The acting was good and it took the time to develop the storyline fully. I was drawn into the characters and their situations. Before I started watching this movie, I started watching another 5 star Prime movie, which was highly rated, and within the first minute, the "s... was used at least 4-5 times by two adolescent characters. I know, I know, it is the language of the day, but I was just not in the mood and watched this instead, and I am glad I did! You know, movies can be done well without needless cussing, sex and over exaggerated drugs, gangs, etc. Sit back and enjoy.

A wonderful love story that overcomes all odds

Loved how the story unfolded going from slavery, and racism, to a compassionate man who takes care of and mentors a lost child into adulthood. Scenery was also spectacular.

Love in action
Verified purchase
Very inspiring story. Illustrates the evil of racism and prejudice, and the power of love thru people opposed to those evils. Evil can only triumph when good parole do nothing. In this story, good people take action. Some lose their lives so others can see their dreams come true. I highly recommend this movie.

Captivating story with engaging characters. It portrays sacrificial and tenacious love as well as evil at it's best.. The actors were top notch and the photography was creatively filmed and captured the breathtaking beauty of Hawaii. This movie moved right along and was never slow. I enjoyed the twists and turns in the plot as well as the suspenseful moments woven throughout .
