This is book 3 of 5 and a relapse of characters from other books. Hughes writes her characters into interwoven storylines and makes for an interesting return to the story of Emmett and Avery. These two are the classic tale of young lovers ripped apart by sad circumstances and families who get involved positively and unfortunately. Avery is caught in a bad situation and feels betrayed when Emmett misunderstands something and is blinded by hurt before he can hear what he needs to hear. Fast forward a few years and the connection between these two is positively electric. Can they overcome a misunderstanding and just listen to each other while saving what they once had? Great read.

Four years later, they are kind of forced together during a summer vacation with their friends. One thing leads to another and they end up back together but with some secrets between them. Emmett has to decide if he can go back to living without Avery or if he's ready to accept her reasons for the secrets. They had such chemistry together but they also had so much heartache. I loved the way things turned out for them in the end.

The way Emmett glared at Avery from across the room, the intensity, the hate, oh my gosh. I was here for every minute of it. I loved the way he “hated” her, but deep down loved her. How he remembered every single detail from the highschool relationship. He falls first! 🫠. Such a great book! I devoured it and couldn’t get enough!

Emmett and Avery make love so attractive, I didn’t want their story to end. Avery has her hands full with her dad and sister. She deserves lots of happiness. Emmett’s parents will not win parents of the year award anytime soon. Money does not make a good person.

I have been dying for this story from the moment I was introduced to Emmett and Avery in the prequel novella, Kings of Rittenhouse. Second chance romances are one of my very favorite tropes and Maya Hughes really delivered! Though this is book 3 in the series, it can be read as a stand alone. It will be most appreciated, however, if read in order/if the prequel is read first.

This book hurt my heart in the best way. The angst and anguish were high in Ruthless King and there were times I didn't think my heart could take it. Emmett and Avery's love burned brightly in high school for 3 years and just when their future should have been opening up before them, things came to a screeching and gut wrenching end. Secrets and circumstances outside of their control drove a wedge right between them. 4 years have passed, and though they still share mutual friends, the pain and anger is so strong that they cannot tolerate being around each other. An epic summer reunion at the shore, however, throws these two back in each other's orbits and past and present come crashing together. You could cut the tension with a knife between these two and so many hurtful words were voiced, especially by Emmett. It becomes clear though that not everything was as it seemed and when the truth explodes between them, readers should hang on tight to their hearts.

I loved Emmett and Avery. Yes, they acted rashly and immaturely at times and made mistake after mistake when they skirted the truth instead of being open and honest, but they both truly only wanted the best for the other. They were so dependent on each other, however, that I felt they needed to be apart so that they could truly grow. Emmett is without a doubt my favorite King. I swooned so hard at how fiercely and deeply Emmett loved. Chapter 14 shattered my heart and pieced it back together at the same time. My chest squeezed so tight reading that chapter.

Emmett's toxic relationship with his parents broke my heart and explained a lot of his insecurities and reactions. I admired Avery's tenacity and the lengths she would go to for her family and those that she loved. Even though I anticipated the drama at the end, I was still upset and annoyed by Avery's inability to come clean until forced. This was a time when I found both sides in the wrong, however, and that made the situation easier to understand and forgive. The story comes full circle in the epilogue and left my heart so full. It also set up Ford's story wonderfully and I cannot wait to see how that unfolds (and how Colm reacts!) Really loved this one and I will ALWAYS be ready and wanting more of Emmett and Avery!

Emmett and Avery met at school and even though they were worlds apart socially they connected in a huge way. Splitting up due to secrets kept them apart. A summer holiday puts them back together and the chemistry is off the charts! This was the first book by Maya I've read but it definitely won't be the last! A great read

Ruthless King told the story of Emmett and Avery, and it had all the guns to be one of the best second chance books ever written. However, Maya Hughes failed miserably in her writing, and what was supposed to be impeccable turned out to be extremely weak. Maya's writing is fluid, but not as cohesive and coherent as should be, and a lot of things was left behind in the narrative.

The couple was interesting, I liked the two of them together, but Maya didn't developed their story very well, and there was a lack of more domestic scenes between them, and she should be explored their past more often.

Avery was the biggest force in the book, Ruthless King was about her. She is an amazing character, strong, hardworking, loyal and sweet. Avery is exactly everything I love in a character. Maya developed her very well and she was the biggest force for me to finish the book.

Emmett had everything to be an amazing character, but in the end, he turned out to be boring and hypocritical. He accused Avery of something terrible, without even giving her a chance to explain.
