Blog postThis five page comic (drawn AND written by me) ran as alternate covers for IDW’s G.I.Joe vol.3, issues #7-11 and were a follow up of sorts to The Comic Book History of G.I. Joe I had done for them previously.
I had a blast making it and slipping as many in-jokes and obscure 90's GI Joe characters I could manage in a 5 page comic.
I still can't believe they let me get away with this!

Blog postIDW Publishing is releasing The Comic Book History of Animation by writer Fred Van Lente, and myself as a 5 issue comic book series, with a trade paperback collection to follow in July 2021. IDW likes to release 2 different covers per issue - a regular and a variant - and I got to draw, design and color all 10, plus the trade paperback collection (which actually I drew first). Each cover had to:

Blog postCancelled pitches and projects are a normal part of doing business as a freelance creative. Occasionally they will be revived at a later date or the freelancer might recycle the ideas into something similar (like I did with Marci Malone: Intern of Cobra) but usually they are simply abandoned on our hard drives as we move on to our next gig or opportunity and can't be shared with the public (even for free) because of contracts or corporate ownership. But I re-discovered 2 finished Marvel Comic1 month ago Read more

Blog postThe relaunch of ACTION PRESIDENTS is just a few weeks away!
On June 2, 2020 the first 2 books in the series -George Washington and Abraham Lincoln- will be re-released in brand new FULL COLOR editions:
…followed by Teddy Roosevelt and John F Kennedy on June 16! (also in color)
Making a graphic novel takes a lot of time, and making FOUR of them takes even longer.

Blog postJust like every other comic book artist I've ever met I have my own original super hero universe stuck in my head - all centered around one character: Tommy Atomic!
I've made several Tommy Atomic shorts over the years for various anthologies, magazines and mini comics and you can read a collection of some of my favorites in this blog post.
I also have plans for a series of Tommy Atomic stand-alone graphic novels - and here's a crap load of sketches and concepts I've cooked up f1 month ago Read more -
Blog postIn 2013 I was commissioned to write and draw a short non-fiction comic about the behind-the-scenes story of Hasbro's G.I. Joe toys and its associated media properties. As far as I know, this is the ONLY published history of the brand that has been officially approved by Hasbro itself, and I also only had 5 pages to do it, which was quite a challenge!
These comics actually ran as ALTERNATE COVERS of the G.I. Joe comic book series, which at the time was written by ,,Fred Van Lente1 month ago Read more -

Blog postHere's a whole mess of drawings I've done of other people's characters - most were private commissions, some were for fun, a few were try-outs for freelance jobs. Try and guess which is which!
I don't really do private commissions like these anymore BUT- I am running a Kickstarter campaign for my new book THE COMIC BOOK HISTORY OF ANIMATION where a private commission is one of the pledge rewards. So go get one!

Blog post…was a monthly magazine feature where the lead characters of classic comic strips were replaced with characters from popular sci-fi, fantasy, comic book and super hero stories, which I then drew in the same style. It was a fun challenge emulating different cartoon styles every month! Most of these comic strips were conceived and written by the ToyFare editors, but "Fantastic Family Circus" was 100% by me and I wrote the script (but not the concept) for "Nancy Cal1 month ago Read more

Blog postIt all started innocently enough.
In late 2003 I was a few months into working steadily as a freelance illustrator for Wizard Entertainment. One of their magazines, ToyFare, was doing a big feature on the recent revival of 1980’s pop culture properties and they wanted a double-page illustration of a packed with a crowd of retro cartoon characters to accompany it. I was just doing simple spot illustrations for them at that point, the assignment was supposed to go to another freelancer1 month ago Read more -
Blog postOn May 9, 2011 Acme Comics flew me to their store on Free Comic Book Day to do free sketch requests for their customers all day - here's most of them!
Acme had sponsored about 12 artists in all (including my pal Jamal Igle) to draw sketch requests all day long for a line of customers down the block - one single character sketch per customer in black and white so we could draw them in a reasonable amount of time. Fred came down too - and spent most of the day signing multiple

Blog postIn 1995 I moved to New York City with little money and zero plans because that's what you do when you're 23 and feel like you’ve hit the creative ceiling after 2 years as a t-shirt designer in rust belt Pennsylvania. My career goal was to be a full-time freelance illustrator and I always treated graphic design as a day job/gateway gig - and I figured there would be a lot more of those in New York than anywhere else, so when three of my college pals were looking for a 4th roommate to split the1 month ago Read more

Blog postAs soon as I had written and drawn a real Marvel-616 continuity comic the requests for M.O.D.O.K. sketches started coming in fast and furious:
There were lots more, and they were all very fun and flattering to be commissioned to draw these for fans. I even re-visited the old "Che MODOK" sketch and finished it up for Robert Goodin's AMAZING "Covered" Blog.
But that was FAR from the end.
I ALSO came up with an idea to boost the sales numbers of M.O.D.1 month ago Read more
