From the Inside Flap

"Cadwyn!" Basheba's scream dragged his eyes from the standoff before him.

He looked over to find Basheba sprinting across the field, her hair glistening golden in the light, and her lips curled in a savage snarl. In that moment, be it because of desperation or blood loss, he had the strongest urge to cheer her arrival.

"Move you idiot!" she bellowed.

Snapped from his shock, he raced to catch up with her. Chaos grew behind him, but he refused to look back. His eyes were set on the far gate, the orchard beyond, and he needed to get there before the bull escaped Buck's attack. There was a sharp, pained yelp from somewhere behind him. In an instant, rage replaced the determination on Basheba's face. She reached behind her as she picked up her pace, slipping her hand under her jacket. With a sharp jerk, she pulled free her hunting knife.
How long has she been carrying that? The thought barely had time to race across his mind before they clashed.

Basheba threw herself at the beast that was running him down. Cadwyn caught her mid-air and attempted to keep going. Simply keeping hold of her proved to be almost impossible. She thrashed and snarled, as ferocious as her dog, and knocked him off balance. They fell and she slipped free of his grasp. Before the bull could strike, Buck attacked from the opposite side, coaxing the bull to swing its head around. Basheba took advantage of the opening, lunging forward to slash her blade across its muscular neck.

It reared back, bucking and kicking its hooves wildly. Cadwyn tackled her out of the way before it could stomp her head. Buck went for its exposed underbelly, forcing it back again. Clasping her hand tightly, Cadwyn ran for the gate again. It took a few hard pulls to make her follow. And, even when she did, her eyes never left Buck.

"It's a trap," he spat out between panted breaths. "We need to fall back."

Basheba licked her lips, desperately trying to force out a whistle and signal her dog, but she was breathing too hard to make it work.

"He'll follow!" Cadwyn snapped.

They raced back, Basheba clutching his hand. Each rumbling growl made her look over her shoulder. He had to continually pull her forward to prevent her from going back.

"He'll follow," he repeated.

When they finally got to the fence, Ozzie and Mina reached out to help them over. Whitney had been slower to come but struggled a bit faster once she realized her bull was injured. Cadwyn looped an arm around Basheba's waist and unceremoniously dumped her over the fence. By the time he was working his long legs over, she had already scrambled back onto her feet and was in the process of climbing back into the paddock. He shoved her hard on her shoulder to keep her out.

"It hurt him!" Basheba roared, her one good eye glaring at the bull with bloodlust. "I'm going to turn it into hamburger!"

With his feet once more securely on the ground, Cadwyn had to pick her up again to drag her away.

"You attacked my bull?" Whitney stammered.

"It attacked me," Cadwyn tried to placate.

The woman wasn't having it. "You shouldn't have been in his field. Call your dog back before he does more damage."

A bellowing bark proved the order to be useless. Buck was already on his way back, muscles rippling under his fur as he ran at a staggering speed. He outpaced the injured bull and hurdled over the gate with ease. Cadwyn glanced back across the field. All the fury had left the bull. It now limped lazily across the grass, licking at its injured leg, and looking utterly confused. Cadwyn searched the tree line beyond it, trying to find a trace of the inky black shadow he had seen before. The adrenaline that had kept him upright faded away and he dropped with a broken cry.

"Are you okay?" Basheba asked breathlessly. "You're bleeding."

"I'm okay," Cadwyn assured as he gripped his wounded thigh. Then it hit him. "You're talking to Buck."

The size difference between Buck and Basheba made it completely unnecessary for her to kneel down to hug his neck. She did so anyway, lovingly patting him and tending to the small, barely visible scrape on his side. The Rottweiler winced.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," Basheba said swiftly. "Cadwyn, he's injured. Can you have a look at him?"

"Seriously?"

When she looked at him, he lifted one bloodied hand to prove his point. Mina knelt down beside him, having already ripped the sleeves of her shirt off. She checked the wound.

"Is it deep?" she asked.

"I'll need stitches," he said, gasping sharply as she tied the tourniquet tightly around his thigh.

"Basheba," Ozzie said. "Give me the keys, I'm going to get the car."

Basheba tossed them over to the teen as she moved closer to check on Cadwyn.

"How's my hero?" Cadwyn smiled.

"I'm fine." She paused and smirked. "Oh, you're talking about Buck."

"You should get a tetanus shot," Mina cut in. "I wouldn't trust what's on that bull's horns."

"Oh, he's very clean," Whitney said. "You will be paying for his vet bills, of course."

"Sure thing," Basheba said, her voice tight. "Quick question: where did you get that thing that almost killed my friend?"

Cadwyn could almost see Whitney's mind churning, trying to figure out if she was in any legal trouble. Still, she answered.

"He's a gift from the woods."

Mina whipped around to face her. "What do you mean by that?"

Whitney laughed lightly. "It's just a local saying. You'd be surprised what wanders out of those woods."

Cadwyn glanced back to the shadows on the far side of the field. The creature was gone, but he could still feel it watching him. A cold, gut-twisting glare that left him breathless.

"Yeah. You'd be surprised by what stays inside it."
