Not Bad

It is al'right but this presentation is very much abridged. Additionally, direction is predictably and fashionably sterile, pretentious and not fully faithful. Furthermore, the incidental music seems somewhat gratuitous. Moreover, Anderson (St. John The Baptist) is over-the-top, cringeworthy and inappropriate. In addition, I do not care for the performance of Chastain (Princess Salome). She seems to cry aplenty and unnecessarily and she strangely has a quasi-dominatrix vibe when she manipulates The Young Syrian but I imagine some viewers will enjoy her. On the bright side of things, Pacino (King Herod) and Hart (Queen Heriodias) are very good, and The Dance is effective.

Boring, poor representation...

I had high expectations for this version of Salome, but I was bored. Having seen this done by a top class opera company, I expected so much more. The acting was quite poor by all, and the dance was just phrenetic, not sensual as it was supposed to me. A rush to get it over with....

Superb production of a great play

Al Pacino is mesmerizing as King Herod; all the actors are excellent, especially Roxanne Hart as the Queen and Jessica Chastain as Salomé. The best production of Salomé that I have seen since Steve Berkoff's in the Nineties.

Intense sexual desire spirals into madness

Jessica Chastain's film debut in Salome is so impressive to watch. She transitions seamlessly through the dramatic stages of her character's development which occur over a single evening. This is not the simple biblical story of Herod's stepdaughter who dances for him and is told by her mother Herodias to demand the severed head of John the Baptist as reward--a girl manipulated by adults. Jessica Chastain is totally convincing in Oscar Wilde's far more fantastical and hypersexualized version of the story which had already been embroidered upon for centuries.
Wilde/Salome was most interesting for Chastain's insights into her character's motivations.

"Speak the speech, I pray you, trippingly on the tongue"

Visually appealing, especially Jessica Chastain, but director Pacino ruined it for me by instructing his actors to speak in the most unnatural, unidiomatic way possible--accenting words and using rhythms in a way no native speaker would ever do. Not as bad as the Berkoff version, which likewise distorts the language; both should go back and read Hamlet's advice to actors.
