Prof. Yuval Noah Harari has a PhD in History from the University of Oxford and lectures at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, specializing in world history. His books have been translated into 65 languages, with 40 million copies sold worldwide. 'Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind' (2014) looked deep into our past, 'Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow' (2016) considered far-future scenarios, and '21 Lessons for the 21st Century' (2018) zoomed in on the biggest questions of the present moment. 'Sapiens: A Graphic History' (launched in 2020) is a radical adaptation of 'Sapiens' into a graphic novel series, which Harari created and co-wrote in collaboration with comics artists David Vandermeulen (co-writer) and Daniel Casanave (illustrator).

I bought the collection, so I read both books without a break. The first book was quite informative. A great history lesson on civilisation, society, and mankind.
In the second book, at first I felt like I was being lectured to. But as I read more, I realized that the author was laying a foundation of concepts. They needed to be understood before the more speculative ideas, for possible futures, could be presented. Homo Deus went as far as it should, in trying to forecast a possible near-future where intelligent algorithms might silently rule over organic humankind.

I read both books back to back. It was long, well over a thousand pages, but I couldn't put it down. Incredible clear explanation of the history of humans and an eye opening view of our existence and development as a species. The scientific side of my brain was fascinated with both the history and the science. The philosophical side of my brain just had the blindfold removed. Informative and scary at the same time. The most important thing is that what I read in this book is now stuck in my head and will forever influence the way I see the human race and the future of our species.

Sapiens Replete with speculation, and some facts incorrect

Although the book is mostly readable, and includes some engaging historical information, it is replete with speculation and the author's own views and theories (many of which are arguable). In some places, it is quite superficial, failing to explore other explanations or delving more deeply into the ones provided. In other places, especially in the beginning where the author is talking about human evolution, the facts are incorrect. Having heard good things about this book, I was somewhat disappointed. It did not measure up to my expectations, which made me unhappy (those who have read this, will understand the basis for this comment).

I spent my summer reading the first book, Homo Deus and found it one of the most interesting nonfiction books I’ve ever read. I learned so much more about our ancestors and appreciate their sophistication and realizing that progress is a mixed bag, both positive and negative..

The second volume, Homo Deus, took longer; partially because I had less time to read for pleasure and because it painted a disturbing picture of where we are heading as a species. I highly recommend you read both. They will give you ideas that will be difficult to leave behind.

I have only read Sapiens so far. It is actually disturbing in the way it looks at history. Whether his presentation of how Sapiens came to be born, his take on religions or how we are in a capitalist system after other systems failed, these interpretations make you question your belief and what you have learned in school. I'm reading Deux now and will probably re read Sapiens.
