A tragic accident took Rome Matthew's wife, Diana, and it robbed Sarah Harper of her best friend. Sarah wanted to reach out to Rome, but she knew she needed to stay away, guarding the secret she had kept from him and Diana - that she was in love with her best friend's husband. But now Rome needs her. Sarah agrees to be his wife, and something totally unexpected rekindles her hidden hope that a marriage of convenience will become a union of love.
Will Rome keep fighting his own growing need for a woman who dares him to believe there are second chances in life...or will he give in to the power of love and miracles?

I saw Sarah as the epitome of a victimized woman, willing to put up with near rape and of verbal abuse...all in the name of "love". What she had done was marry controlling, selfish man and made endless excuses for his horrible behavior hoping he would change. She was the stereotypical abused wife.
I skimmed through most of the book hoping she would eventually realize her mistake, but it didn't happen. Too bad.
Rome especially is not someone you can like. The author puts us in his mind-space too, but he comes across as totally selfish and wierd. Yes you feel for him as a man who has lost wife and two sons, but overall he comes across as a not so nice person. It put me off that he was lusting after Sarah all thru his marriage to Diane.
Sarah's character is very well defined - her choices clearly thought out.
The only jarring thing was her agreeing to keep her child away from him (he won't even know it was there). Really. Even if it is done with the hope that over time Rome will come around, how would that affect the child - if he took years to come around. What mother would do that to their child? Especillay considering Rome's attitude all throughout the pregnancy and even after birth at the hospital.
Yes we are supposed to understand Rome's POV, and yes sure to some extent (maybe) we could, but cannot understand Sarah's POV on this.

However, the author get's a thumbs up. Will look for her books. Hopefully with characters we can relate to
I did not review the book on my first go around. I just picked up another and kept going.
This is an emotional book because it deals with death and that is never fun.
So the two main characters have known each other for years but one was married to the other's best friend.
I liked how this book slowly forced each to move forward and embrace a new future. So yes this is a second chance story.
I liked the growth of both characters. I personally am not sure I could have survived what happened before this story even started.
Enough. This is a great book. Enjoy.
Rome and Sarah. Great couple. And heartbreaking. I felt so bad that Sarah had loved him before, during and after his marriage. And how heartbreaking for Rome to lose his wife and sons the way he did. And it was completely understandable to me why he refused to let himself love or care that deeply again for anyone else.
But when the baby came...my heart ached for Rome, for Sarah, for their child. It was just absolutely heart wrenching.

this is an emotional story with some good secondary characters that certainly deserve their own story!Sarah is such a passive women (i admit at times i wanted to shake her!),though towards the end of the story we see her strong inner core, which really only makes the story stronger. Rome is a somewhat aggressive, dark character, but who wouldnt be after the tragic death of their wife and sons? i thought a particular strong point in the story was where rome moved away from sarah when he felt the baby kick and continued to avoid even simple intimacies with his wife. the only criticism i have with this book is that perhaps the ending could have been extended. though i truly enjoyed the extremly emotional final chapter of the book.
overall this is a fantastic story that was a fast paced emotional ride.i truly enjoyed it and would recommend it.its a keeper for me!!

I would have given this book five stars if it weren't for the fact that this was published in the mid 80s, and it shows!
Sarah has loved Rome, the male lead, since she first met him, but had to look on from afar as her best friend married him and had a family with him. They never really interacted until sometime after her best friends death. After an eventful reunion, Rome offers to marry her. Linda Howard (LH) manages to construct only a flimsy reason for his offer of marriage, but of course she accepts. The rest of the book follows them through the first few months or so of their marriage, and the events that follow.
Sarah is very needy and has Rome on a pedestal, which is the case with many female heroines in romances published around this time, and which I find very irritating- no matter how horrible the male lead is, the female lead always seemed to be written as an ever-forgiving, loving doormat. And Rome IS horrible, very horrible quite a few times.
But at the same time the romance of it all is quite gripping, and in LH's usual way the heart stopping love scenes and romantic interludes have you hooked. The way Rome cares for her in a very cro-magnon, 'me man me throw rock take care of woman' way, is addictive to read.
Definitely a book to add to your collection if you are an LH follower. If this is your first LH book, be aware that her first books were very much like this, but as her books progressed to the 90s and then the 21st century, her female heroines developed and became much more sassy and much less needy, so don't despair!
