A shy wallflower meets her dream man--or does she?--in the next book in New York Times bestselling author Eloisa James' Wildes of Lindow series.
Miss Viola Astley is so painfully shy that she’s horrified by the mere idea of dancing with a stranger; her upcoming London debut feels like a nightmare.
So she’s overjoyed to meet handsome, quiet vicar with no interest in polite society — but just when she catches his attention, her reputation is compromised by a duke.
Devin Lucas Augustus Elstan, Duke of Wynter, will stop at nothing to marry Viola, including marrying a woman whom he believes to be in love with another man.
A vicar, no less.
Devin knows he’s no saint, but he’s used to conquest, and he’s determined to win Viola’s heart.
Viola has already said Yes to his proposal, but now he wants her unruly heart…and he won’t accept No for an answer.

Review
“A very good (historical romance)…Devin starts out as your standard coldhearted duke, so it’s lovely when he’s the first to fall in love.” — New York Times Book Review
"James delivers all the banter and sizzle her fans expect in the nuanced fifth Wildes of Lindow Castle Georgian romance...Series readers will be pleased." — Publishers Weekly
"RITA Award–winning and best-selling James continues her winsomely winning literary streak with another brilliantly conceived and beautifully executed addition in her Wildes of Lindow Castle series. Once again, James expertly calibrates the perfect ratio of exuberant wit to elegant sensuality, and the end result is a romance worth celebrating." — Booklist (starred review)
"SAY YES TO THE DUKE was another great title in the Wildes of Lindow Castle series." — Fresh Fiction

The Wilde stepdaughter is coming out this year. Compared to her step-siblings and her half-siblings, Viola is shy and retiring, and since attending her first adult ball a few years age and having a "terrifying" experience, her body's response to social situations is to vomit. Now with her coming out emanate, a solution must be found. Her best friend, stepsister Joan's solution, recite the mantra, "I'm a Wilde child".
Meanwhile, her stepfather has just hired a new vicar, Mr. Marlowe, and upon meeting him and managing to stay calm and collected, Viola decides that Mr. Marlowe is the solution, she'll marry him, one small impediment, he is betrothed.
Meanwhile, Devin, Duke of Wynter, has decided it's time to marry and the Duke of Lindow's daughter Joan should be just right. His uncle, believes that Devin's late father's late best friend's daughter, Viola would fit the bill.
Devin and Viola's first meeting is less than auspicious. Can Devin convince Viola to say yes to the Duke?
Devin Lucas Augustus Elstan, the Duke of Wynter is fighting with his cousin Otis, Otis has told Devin that he has changed his mind, he doesn’t want to be a vicar anymore and that he is going to travel abroad and find an heiress to wed. Devin convinces him to stay until they find another vicar, he also mentions that he is playing on marrying – he has already chosen his bride, Lady Joan Wilde. Otis warns that he will have a lot of competition, but Devin isn’t worried, he wants Joan and he gets what he wants.
Viola hatches a plan, she needs to get over her shyness (a task that Joan is helping her with) and show Mr. Marlowe that she is the perfect wife for him. She arranges a meeting in the library on the night of her debut ball. But when she arrives in the library, it is already occupied – she hides and hears Devin and his uncle talking – Sir Reginald tells Devin that Viola would be the perfect bride for him – Devin disagrees, he says that she isn’t really a Wilde and that she is a timid mouse. His uncle tells him he is wrong and that if he wants to get technical – Lady Joan isn’t a Wilde either. Devin doesn’t care, he wants Joan, end of story. When his uncle leaves, Mr. Marlowe arrives and Viola comes out of hiding. She makes comments that let Devin know that she heard him talking about her. Devin sends Mr. Marlowe away and escorts Viola back to the ball, on the way she gives him a proper set down and Devin admits that she is not the mouse he thought she was, intrigued he askes to escort her to supper – NO and she fobs him off on another woman he criticized.
Devin realizes his uncle was right, Lady Joan is not right for him, but Viola is perfect. He sets out to win her away from the vicar by means fair or foul. Even if he has to take advice from his cousin Otis, even if he has to woo her, even if he has to hire Mr. Marlowe away from the duke. But winning her is only part of it, soon he realizes he wants it all, her body, her heart and her love, a task made harder when he learns that he is the man that terrified her all those years ago…
I have enjoyed all the books in this series, but I LOVED this book, it is a well written, delightful, uncomplicated, steamyish read with wonderful characters and plenty of witty banter. Devin is a wonderful hero with a troubled childhood and fears of being unstable like his father and Viola wrestles with feelings of unworthiness and feeling like she doesn’t belong. I just love how together they learn to move on and find happiness. If you are looking for a fun, lighthearted read, look no further, this is that book.
This is the fifth book in the series, but it can easily be read as a stand-alone title. I highly recommend this series and this title especially.
Viola is the stepdaughter of a duke, the Duke of Lindow. The Wilde Family has reputations in London and England. Her stepbrothers and stepsisters are considered celebrities. Viola considers herself a liability. She is small, the Wildes are tall. She is shy and gets an upset stomach when put into the public eye. The Wildes live their lives and ignore the public eye.
She and, Joan, one of her stepsisters are having their come out. It is a gala event. And Viola has planned to meet a man in secret. The man is a minister, he is beautiful and she can speak to him without wanting to throw up.
When she goes into the library, she finds it is not empty. There are two men discussing Joan and Viola. She listens and learns. One of the men is the Duke of Wynter, and the other man is his uncle. The Duke is looking for a bride, and he has decided it will be Joan. Joan is beautiful and vibrant. The uncle recommends Viola. The Duke, Devin, considers her a mouse and not worthy of his consideration.
Devin is very wrong.
When Viola gets the opportunity, she informs Devin that he is never going to get the chance to court Joan, she will not permit it. She also informs him that he is not the treasure he considers himself.
These two people have some of the best conversations I have read in quite some time.
When Devin decides that Viola will be his bride, and he will win her, she ignores him, discourages him and generally put him in his place.
Devin is not easily discouraged.
Viola is a wonderfully tender hearted young woman. She is also strong and powerful. She has a sense of right and wrong and she believes that it is her lot in life to save creatures and sometimes people. To Viola, being the wife of a minister will mean she can do good works and not have to be a celebrity.
Devin has lived his entire life with the knowledge he is a duke. His childhood was less than perfect. He did not have the family love and affection that Viola had in her life. He has very little family and that is just fine with him. His main interest is mathematics and he has no desire to become close in any relationship. And Devin never wants anyone’s pity.
Viola is beautiful, she makes Devin laugh and she provides an entire new perspective for him. He begins to see the world through Viola’s eyes. And he finds that laughing is not a bad thing.
These two people are wonderful characters.
The secondary characters in the story add a great deal to the book. The fiancee of Mr Marlowe, the minister, is worth the price of admission. She is someone who is unforgettable and not in a good way.
Although this is part of a series, there is no sense of getting lost. All relationships are explained. Past events which are important to this plot are described.
I loved this book. I have liked the earlier books in this series, but I loved this book. This is a wonderful series.
Ms James always gives me humor and I really appreciate that. She also provides characters who are charming, likable and generally interesting.
If you are seeking a story which will make you smile and give you a sense of delight in the happily ever after, this is the book for you.

Say Yes to the Duke by Eloisa James
⭐⭐⭐

‘“I don’t want just any Wilde. I want the most beautiful Wilde of all,” Devin said, his voice rasping. “The woman with a wide mouth who laughs easily and taught me in the space of one day to love a giggle. Who knows medieval plays and abandoned crows. The woman with a darling pointed chin and exquisite hazel eyes.”’
I was so desperately excited to see that Eloisa James had a brand new historical romance releasing. She is one of my go-to authors for that genre. She writes with accuracy, passion, understanding and exuberance. Her characters are always painted and portrayed so vividly, shining off the page, espousing the many complex ways of the ton, engaging, beguiling and intriguing. However, Say Yes to the Duke fell by the wayside for me. It was missing the usual magic, charm and appeal of Eloisa’s previous work. In fact I loathe to admit this, I found myself skimming pages, and when you’re forking out £6.99 for an ebook - a price range that I only reserve for my absolute favourite authors work - it seemed all the more steep in price.
It was an average read. I wasn’t thoroughly engaged, I wasn’t anticipating the next chapter, or excited to even see where the story took us. It was rather dreary, long winded and mediocre. There was little to no real passion between our hero and heroine. There was something decidedly lacking between the pair. I needed a spark, something brighter and more magnetic than what we got. It did get more steamy and sensual closer to the end of the book but even then it felt like a more profound connection between the pair was absent.
It wasn’t until the last quarter of the book that I really started to enjoy it. Our heroine was more assertive, confident and likable. The same too for our hero. Even though the plot revolves around these two getting together, I never felt like we truly got to know the characters. It all seemed fairly superficial, again so did Viola’s anxiety issues. They were dominant in her life for so many years and then all of a sudden they were gone. No more crippling shyness or nausea.
Say Yes to the Duke was - dare I say it - nice. Such a bland word. Nothing overtly exciting or thrilling occurred. A lot of the story covered a variety of other characters, who were semi-entertaining for the most part but I wanted more Viola and Devin. I wanted them to really know one another. So, I was very disheartened by this new release. However, not every author is going to knock it out of the park every time and I’ll still be a massive fan of Eloisa James. This one just wasn’t for me.
