The Serpentes have long felt that isolation was the best way to survive in the galaxy, but a traitor’s actions have revealed their presence to the universe, and Admiral El’Jyiurma of the Serpentes Space Navy has traveled to Gieliv to prevent a terrorist incident from being inflicted on the humans there. She returns home triumphant, but there is trouble brewing—the Serpentes face peril from both internal and external forces, and El’Jyiurma finds herself caught up in the middle.
With word of their existence growing, they catch the attention of a race they’d rather not meet. At the same time, they must battle the hatred and fear that automatically comes from humans, based merely on their appearance.
Fearing an invasion from outside forces, President Frazier of Gieliv sends a desperate plea to the Serpentes, requesting help to bolster their weak navy. With a potential attack looming, the king of the Serpentes sends El’Jyiurma to the Gieliv system to foster diplomatic relations and help defend Gieliv.
Hard choices have to be made, and El’Jyuirma is in the hot seat. Which is the more significant threat, and how can it be stopped? A wrong choice could lead to the end of the Serpentes civilization, and El’Jyiurma has little time to decide.

This particular book focuses on fall out from an early story and the Serpentes race, who prefers isolation over everything else for the most part. Unfortunately, they've been discovered by one of the nastier races, a group of slavers, and the race is on to figure out how (or if) the Serpentes can be defended.
An excellent book, though definitely NOT a standalone book really. It builds on several on events from earlier books a bit. Recommended, but definitely when read within the series in order.
Don’t get me wrong, I DID enjoy this book. I just really don’t fully get this idea of “open?” Universe style of writing. Perhaps you young people can forgive an old man for still loving the new work without fully understanding how you create it.
The next problem was the Protagonist. They were Snakes! I expected they would have at least vestigial arms/hands. Nope they were Snakes. BIG SNAKES. Well, maybe a symbiotic species to be their hands? Nope. There are on the planet humans, but they are second class citizens. Not as food, or even servants, much less slaves! Strike Two.
A space-faring race of Snakes who build their own space ships. They even have two inhabited planets in their system. How exactly are Snakes, even really BIG SNAKES capable of building a Technological Civilization? Strike Three.
The plotting of the book was okay, but simplistic, stilted and...well juvenile. Read Campbell's 'the Black Star Passes. Or Heinlein's 'Have Spacesuit Will Travel.
