Perfect for bus-obsessed toddlers

We have a 21 month old who loves school buses. His previous favorite bus book was a bus book intended for early readers (Mighty Machines series). It was full of photos but only comes in regular paper pages. Not only was it getting destroyed, it was getting a little boring for us. We wanted a board book with realistic buses, not cartoons with eyes. I was unsure if he would like this book as much as the other one but he loves it and we do read it about 30 times a day. Yes, a large format edition would be great, but the small one is nice for him - he can carry it around and look at it himself. The accompanying text is simple but pleasant to read, strongly rhythmic without being sing-songy, and the illustrations are bold. If your child likes buses or you have enjoyed other books by Donald Crews, I recommend this book.

My son found this book at the local library and really liked it so I decided to buy it. What a disappointment. The edition we checked-out was 1984, good size, with very crisp illustrations. This 2002 edition is third of the original size and seems very much dumbed down--the illustrations are small and cartoonish, while in the 1984 edition there was sharpness and simplicity of lines that looked really stylish. I am so disappointed but clearly I am not going to bother with the return this for the sake of $6. What a strange decision on the part of the publishers to spoil this originally beautiful book.

I agree with another contrary review that I noticed when I came to write this: there is no plot. It is tough to get plot in a book suitable for 4-8 year olds, I know, but I have seen such better efforts than this.

But here's the main reason I came to review this book... To warn everyone that the font that was selected is horrendous. It hurts my eyes to look at it. I am being serious and literal when I say it caused my eyes pain. I am not a font guy, so I can't tell you what kerning mistakes were made, I can just tell you that this font is designed to injure you. I would've felt more comfortable reading this book in comic sans.

This book includes so many of those fun pages from the original book (all buses!!!), and was an instant hit with him. There isn't really a story line, but, if you are a little kid who really only wants to see buses, then this is perfect. We love it!

whenever i take my boy to the local book store, he runs to this book and sits on my laps so we can read it together.
he sees a dozen of school buses whenever we go out for a walk. when he read this book for the first time, he seemed fascinated to find out where these buses were going.
he's very interested in traffic lights, so he gets all excited when we get to "Stop" and "Go" pages. he points and babbles!
the book shows people lining up for the bus and the scene; i use it as a reference when we go to a toddlers' program and it helps him wait in line for his turn.
the book also has a scene parents picking up kids; my boy gives me a hug as he points at the mommy and the boy hugging in the book.
there are not many words on each page, but there's so much to talk about on each page with my little one!

I'm somewhat torn as to how to rate this book. There aren't many books about buses out there for the toddler set. In fact, every one that I've found is some version of the "wheels on the bus" song, often with obnoxious electronic gadgetry included. I knew that I didn't want one of those, so I got this instead.

So: my toddler loves buses. He loves everything to do with buses. He loves real buses, toy buses, songs about buses - need I go on? He deeply loves this bus book. He is not, shall we say, a terribly discriminating bus connoisseur. On a scale of one to five, he gives this book several hundred stars. I like the book because he likes it, although I'm not sure it will outlive his first fascination with buses.

My husband, on the other hand, is rather more critical. He hates the art, both because the perspective is inconsistent and because the style is so very 1970s. There's no story, as such, just captions of the illustrations on each page. I think he would give it two stars.
