When it comes to men, Payton is as clueless as she is with social cues. She prefers to stick with what she knows: Sci-Fi, comic books, video games and web design. After a heartbreaking incident her freshman year of college, she was never able to look at big muscular men the same way again. So imagine her surprise and absolute fright when she catches the eye of the massive, hulking MMA fighter, who she secretly nicknames The Red Giant.

“[…] that man adores you. Not all big men are abusers and rapists. Just like, not all average guys are nice and harmless. You just have to learn to read the warning signs.”
Don’t misunderstand, I liked Payton and her honest, no holds barred word vomit, but what kept nagging me about her character was why didn’t this woman — who is obviously VERY intelligent– ever get professional help to deal with her PTSD? In the TWELVE YEARS since, Payton just shut down; preferring to exist in her “imaginary room filled with Star Wars posters, video games, and a princess bed,” instead of living her adult life. That reaction to trauma is so very real, so I do appreciate why Payton was portrayed that way. Though I will admit to an occasional deep sigh as Payton keeps putting off Bradyn, who has done nothing but show her that he means well.
Besides Bradyn and Payton, what I thoroughly FLOVED about this book was the dynamic between Payton and her girlfriends; Mia, Kennedy, and Royal. These heartwarming interactions brought out such hilarious moments, that had me laughing out loud as I read along. Also, the other ladies gave Payton some much needed REAL TALK at just the right times. Although the Sisterhood of the Curvy Girls was a big part of The Red Scot‘s storyline, Ms. Turner weaved it in without the reader (i.e. me) ever feeling like it took away from the journey I was on with Bradyn and Payton.
The Red Scot is a sweet and sexy read with bits of suspense and lots of humor. The story was well-executed and paced perfectly for the not-so-romantic subject matter included along the way. I can’t wait for each of the other ladies’ stories and who they’ll be paired with in the future. Btw, if you read my Release Day Spotlight, it looks like Royal will be next in the Curvy Girls Club series.

This was a very enjoyable story. I liked Payton and LOVED Bradyn (who has now made it to my book boyfriend list).
A big reason I love Bradyn is his answer when asked why he wants Payton over all the other women he cold easily have:
"Simple." Braydyn took a deep breath. "Those other lasses are vases and she's a flower pot."
"Dude, what the hell are you talking about? Vases and flower pots?" Mitch furrowed his brow in confusion.
"Vases are usually beautiful and purely decorative. They're sleek and sometimes expensive. But they are also the place flowers go te die. They can only bring life to the flower for so long before its empty shell eventually kills it. And if they're not used te temporarily hold flowers, then they're empty and meant for nothing more than te look pretty on someone's shelf or mantel." Bradyn leaned back in his chair, placed his hands on the back on his head and smiled, before continuing. "Now, a flower pot can be bonnie, painted, or even a little fancy. They can also be chipped and round and even plain. But they're filled with rich soil and if treated right, they are the places where flowers go te grow. Payton is a flower pot. Those other lasses are vases. I have no need for a vase."
So, on to the review...
Payton is a web designer that works for a tech company. She's very shy and tends to have panic attacks around men because of an attempted rape she went through while a freshman in college. Payton met her 3 young women on that fateful day in college and they became her BFF from then on.
Bradyn is a MMA fighter, the champion of the heavy weight division. He also owns a gym and has a rule that there's no bullying or making others feel uncomfortable. Bradyn is a big, mean-looking guy and he has his choice of women but he's really shy underneath. He's never been in a relationship because no woman has stood out as someone he wants and when he finally meets Payton, he doesn't know how to approach her.
Payton is getting ready to turn 30 and has never dated. Her friends all try to encourage her to give a guy a chance but Payton has freakouts at the thought of going out with a guy. Payton realizes that it's been 12 years since her almost rape and she needs to get herself a life and a date. She overhears some guys talking about women (rather despairingly) at work and after she gives them a piece of her mind, she wonders if maybe she should start working out. Payton goes to a gym with a friend from work and it ends up being Bradyn's gym. The first time Bradyn sees Payton, he's enamored with her and wants to approach her but doesn't know how. He makes some attempts but the one time he manages to get her attention, she sees him as a less than helpful time and he scares her more than anything else.
Thankfully, Payton gets her BFFs to go to the gym with her and they soon realize that Bradyn is trying to get some face-time with Payton. Once they figure he's a nice guy, the BFFs help him out with some suggestions on how to gain some time with Payton in a way that wouldn't freak her out. Payton tends to be a bit clumsy and after Bradyn shows extreme patience and understanding (and no anger) even when she makes his nose bleed, Payton begins to trust Bradyn. It takes a bit for Bradyn to get past Payton's defenses but once he does, things go pretty quickly. Things go well between them and outside of some drama with a stalker/weirdo there's not too much angst to deal with. By the end, Bradyn and Payton are happily together and heading towards a HEA.
This was a very enjoyable story. I liked Payton very much. She was shy but not annoyingly so. I will say that 12 years without a date (and still experiencing panic attacks) seemed a bit extreme but I was able to get past that. I liked her geekiness and it worked well for the most part but a few times, it seemed like the author added some extra "geeky bits" into the story that seemed a bit OTT at times. I don't know...maybe it was just seemed overboard to me because I work in IT and am a geek but I don't go that far...Still, I liked Payton overall. Bradyn was a big teddy bear of a guy and I loved him! He's big and tough and is Scottish (Yay!) but deep down he's a sweety that just wants to find the right girl and love and protect her (and teach awkward kids in his gym). I'd love to have a Bradyn of my own! Overall, this was a very good story and I'd recommend it. :)
Payton, a web designer, is a shy girl who prefers to hide behind her computer. An event from her past makes her scared of men - especially big muscular ones. So when she catches the eye of MMA champion, Bradyn MacTavish, she all but jumps out of her skin. But underneath all that brawn, Bradyn is teddy bear.
Seemingly an unlikely pair, Bradyn's kindness and care (and the help of 3 curvy girls), coaxes Payton out of her shell and learn to trust him.
The love between them blooms slowly as they both learn to step outside their comfort zones. I liked the fact that the author chose to pair her skittish heroine with exactly the kind of man she'd normally be afraid of (on the surface), and how Bradyn's backstory makes him the perfect guy for Payton.
The author's writing style is easy to read, although there is room for improvement. I found the word 'shy' and 'shyly' so overused in the book.
