This brilliant adaptation of The Seagull by Anton Chekov finds a cast and creative team to do it justice. Veteran stage, film and yes television actors participate in passionate and committed performances. Once in a while we are given great film making...yes 'art house' worthy. Keep making them please and make them available to stream to reach a wider audience. Love you Annette Bening!

Does this seagull fly?

To begin with I am teaching this play in a class at the University of Utah and will show it to the class in two weeks after we have read and discussed it. I have watched the production of course, and despite the excellent cast (Benning and Ronan in particular) I found this rendition to lack an inner tension in the characters that any Chekhov play absolutely requires. The early relationship between Treplyov and Nina seems over done in terms of how close their relationship is. I have other quibbles and I should probably rewrite this in a week or so after the class has viewed it and we will have a new discussion. It is a production that needs to be seen more than once and it must be seen on the background of a reading of the play— both in English and in Russian if possible.

The seagull flies to peace~

This movie was very excellent in character development and filming. Oh for the reasons of love, our actions have consequences. This is not a funny movie but very sad so, if you like drama, that is what you will get with this movie.

This really only serves to convey a somewhat melancholy sadness that I will likely die before I am able to see "all" of Saoirse Ronin's life's work. She will go down in history as one of the greatest actresses who every lived. It is hard to fathom the endless well of inspiration that she draws from and brings to each role, and so very many roles already at still such a young age. There are actresses who hope to play such roles in their entire life, and she has played them in just 10-15 years. Watch "Mary Queen of Scots; watch "The Way Back"; watch "The Lovely Bones"; watch "Lady Bird"; watch "Little Women"; watch "Brooklyn"; watch "Hanna"...all stunning work, and that is only half of what she has done thus far at just 26 years of age. I must say that this entire cast was great though, especially Annette Bening. It was nice to see Mare Winningham as well..seems like yesterday that she was in the brat-pack movies of the 1980's.

I only watched this because I paid for it.

I should have called Amazon and gotten a refund. This movie was painful to watch. Annette Bening is in it. I thought it would be good. I like period pieces. It was awful. No one loved who they should have loved and they drove themselves crazy and me too!

I loved it and even if you aren’t aware of Chekhov’s work you won’t have any problem connecting to this story of bourgeois ennui. The casting was spot on and the film struck the right tone the location, cinematography and direction were beautiful.

Brilliant and beautiful adaptation of Chekhov's play

Phenomenal casting, brilliantly adapted and beautifully filmed. It REALLY helps to have read the play before seeing the film, not least in order to keep the characters and the intricate relationships straight. The actor playing Constantine is letter perfect in an extraordinarily difficult role, well matched in the casting of his mother. But the entire cast is superb! Each character loves someone who passionately loves someone else; heartbreaks ensue.

Big Ronan fan 😁

Ms. Ronan is such an excellent actress and this cast is superior. There were areas I would like to have gone deeper, but overall a good movie.
