Ride along on this endearing road-trip rom-com from Audie Award nominee Cara Bastone - scripted exclusively for audio!
I have exactly 5 hours and 10 minutes to get from Boston to New York City or the professional opportunity of a lifetime disappears. My only travel option? The second to last seat on a discount bus. Across from the bathroom. Wearing last night’s clothes (don’t ask). All worth it if I can make it in time.
My nerves almost get the best of me, but then there he is, sitting down in the seat next to me. Tall. Friendly smile. Bright indigo streak in his brown hair. The perfect distraction. Turns out he’s on his way to reconnect with an old flame. The one who got away. We can both make it on time - just barely - if the traffic keeps flowing.
Playing road-trip games, avoiding calls from his mother, and effortless conversation keeps us from clockwatching...until the bus breaks down. And my seatmate turns into my copilot as we wrangle a ride in a car three decades old. And hit all the traffic. And oh, Lord, the detours. And somehow I end up careening cross-town on the handlebars of a Citi Bike carrying a box of kittens. (Yeah, don’t ask.)
He’s my hero every step of the way...and I might be falling for him. But what happens when we reach our final destination? Could my seatmate really be my soul mate?

Well, absolutely a Cara Bastone fan, that is for sure!
Gwen and Sam meet in the absolute worst bus seats on a Mega Bus ride from Boston to NYC. The bathroom aisle seats. But, despite their bad seats, their seat choices turn into an epically lucky and happily-ever-after fairy tale ride.
I don't want to spend much more time on the plot, because this is a story meant to be listened. The author wrote specifically for the audiobook format, and utilized it to charming perfection. Gwen and Sam felt like they were actually sitting in those seats talking to each other, and I hope the narrators were able to narrate together, and if they didn't heck I don't know how they pulled this off.
This is a full-cast and full production, so do know there are sound effects and additional voices from some of the other characters Gwen and Sam interact with. That said for a fairly short (just over five hours) experience, Bastone knows that we want to spend the majority of our time with these two as they fall for each other.
This is the type of romance I'm here for. Tightly focused on the love interests. Everything else supports and brings meaning to their romance arc. Secondary characters are there, are fully formed, but are not distracting from the romance. Perfect.
My one slight recommendation/quibble is that the sound effects of traffic noises and startling traffic dangers might not make the best experience if you usually listen while you drive (like me). I chose to continue listening to this one at home.
Thank you to Audible!
I have listened to lots of audios but this one was different.
It is dual narration (plus a few extras) and it sounds like an actual whole production.
At first, I wasn't sure. The characters are siting next to each other on a bus and it felt awkward listening to it, but then again... wouldn't that be awkward in real life?
Then the story got into a groove and I was hooked.
The characters are SO detailed and unique. Their life experiences couldn't be more different.
Then the most ridiculous antics happen and the pace picked right up.
I love all of the takeaway lessons about life that this story leaves you with.
and an EPIC TWIST that I never saw coming.
The only good thing that seems to happen to our main characters is the fact that they sat next to each other on this bus. Their seats stink, his mom sets him up on a blind date to pick him up from the bus stop, the bus gets a flat tire, they save a litter of kittens from the middle of the freeway… There is a LOT packed into this five hour audiobook. I’ve never read anything by Cara Bastone, but I immediately downloaded the first and second books from this series. Seatmate has been the first really feel-good audiobook that I’ve listened to in a while. The narration was spot on, the movie sound effects add to the tension and fun, and I literally laughed out loud at all of the “is this really happening” scenarios. If you love audiobooks, you shouldn’t miss listening to Seatmate!
Disclaimer- Yes, this is a love story, but it’s all about the meet cute! The story leads up to the relationship and has a ton of charm and tension, but no love scenes. If that’s going to disappoint you, then I suggest you don’t take a listen, but if you love laughing out loud, then this is the audiobook for you! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The plot of Sam and Gwen's story in this particular book takes cute and unexpected turns that bond them in a way that a normal meet cute wouldn't. They don't seem like they're a match but what they learn from a seasoned old lady is that what seems like a complicated situation really isn't complicated at all when the bottom line is as simple as just wanting to be together. Everything else can be dealt with once you acknowledge that.
Audioplays are a terrific listening experience. They're more engaging and immersive than mere narration of a book. And Ms. Bastone is at her best in this format, writing endearing, multifaceted characters, organic sounding dialogue, and a plot that takes some fanciful turns. The narrators too have earned applause for their very natural interpretations. This entire three book series has been so much fun to listen to, and it's included with Audible Plus.
