Jill Shalvis is back with an all-new series and all I can say is yay...because I think I may love this series more than her Lucky Harbor series. This one is set in Colorado with a family of five kids working hard to save the family resort...while at the same time doing their other jobs. For the hero, Aidan, in this first book that means he's a firefighter and works on the search and Rescue teams for the mountain. Yowza...I do love the outdoor, rugged, alpha theme this first book sets up for the entire series. This one is definitely going to be a winner.
But this book is also about Lily. She hasn't been back to Cedar Ridge for ten years. She left when her sister and father died suddenly and she blames herself for that. But she didn't just leave the town, she left Aidan too. Although they weren't truly involved yet, they were on the cusp of something special and it ripped out Aidan's heart when she left.
There's so much to love about this book. I love Aidan and his relationship with his siblings, Mitch, his mother. This is a guy who makes deep connections and he doesn't let go of those for anything. While they all give one another a hard time, they are ALWAYS there to stand with and behind their family. Lily doesn't understand or have that. For the last ten years, she's been completely on her own and independent. To have Aidan there propping her up at every turn is disconcerting and scary for her. She can't learn to rely on him like that.
There is a lot emotionally going on for both these characters. Aidan is having all sorts of issues within his large family. And Lily is simply lost, not sure she can trust again, or forgive herself. There are a ton of feels within this book and the romance was great. Aidan is the definition of alpha. His job is to protect everyone...from fires, from their own idiocy, from nature. He saves people on a daily basis. And if there's ever a character that needs saving and love, it's Lily. The whole circumstances around her sister and father's deaths were heartbreaking. But Aidan is hiding his own dark secrets and regrets.
The book was amazing and the rest of the series cannot come out fast enough. I love this family. Hudson and his worries for his missing twin Jacob. Jacob who is out there somewhere wounded from war, but not making contact with his family. Kenna who's lost everything in a skiing accident and doesn't know where to go from here. Then there's Gray and Penny...high school sweethearts and the oldest son...the happy couple who are showing everyone else that there may be hope out there for true love. I loved them all and each of their stories promise to be fabulous reading as only Jill Shalvis can create. (I'm really hoping Mitch, Aidan's firefighter partner, gets his own story too.)
I highly recommend this one. Gorgeous scenery. Lots of outdoor activity and adventure. And an incredible heart-stopping climax that I adored!
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Lily Danville comes back to the last place she ever wanted to bed. Lily grew up in Cedar Ridge, Colorado and when her family fell apart she ran as far away as she could. Now with her job gone she needs something to get her back on her feet. She wants to avoid the one man that she could never forget. Figures she runs into Aidan Kincaid her first day in town.
Firefighter and rescue worker Aidan Kincaid has never forgotten the one that got away. Having Lily back in town has thrown Aidan for a loop. He has enough on his plate with dealing with his siblings and trying to keep the family business thriving. But Lily now more then ever seems to need someone on her side. Can Aidan convince Lily that he is the man for the job and to keep her in Cedar Ridge?
Lily isn’t just trying to get her career back on track, she needs to forgive herself of a tragedy that had her running in the first place. Will she be willing to bend to let Aidan be the man for her?
Second Chance Summer is a wonderful story about second chances and letting go of the past. Both Aidan and Lily’s past still lingers in both of their minds. From the first reconnection to their first kiss you are rooting for these two to find their happy every after. The chemistry between them is off the charts. An added bonus is the love and loyalty between their friends and family. You can never go wrong with a Jill Shalvis book.
My expectations were high for Second Chance Summer. Shalvis creates wonderful towns for a series of books and then leaves that town, creates a new place and starts a new series. This book was advertised as the first in a new series, in a new town. I was eagerly looking forward to meeting the new friends! This book did not disappoint.
Shalvis makes her readers feel as if she is telling us about friends with whom we have lost touch. I don't ski or even like the mountains but her words drew me in. The town, the ski resort, the tourists and the natives all came to life. Everyone had a history and the book weaves the past events in quite naturally. When we meet new people their past comes out over the course of many conversations, not all at once in a sidebar. That is how we learned the events of 10 years ago, when Lily and Aidan had their first chance together.
Of course, Aidan is an alpha hero. He is a firefighter AND he volunteers with Search & Rescue. Double whammy! He is hot! And very protective of Lily. Lily is used to relying on no one but herself because everyone else has let her down. Aidan has family, a mother and brothers, who interfere as he and Lily try to resolve their differences to find their Happily Ever After.
The conflicts seem real, as do the resolutions. Being smart people does not keep them from making stupid relationship mistakes. We all know people like that, don't we?
Shalvis brings it all together. They get their Happily Ever After and we get a feel-good story. And now I am eagerly anticipating the next book in the series. It will feature one of Aidan's brothers.

I will always head to Jill Shalvis for a comfort read, this was read in a day and I’m glad she has a good back catalogue because I can’t wait to pick up another one. The other two in this series follow the love lives of two of Aidan’s single brothers. I can’t wait to meet the family again.
A 5 star read - I was lost in their lives for a day and a superb escape read for me.
This book is about Aidan and Lily, Aidan is a firefighter and Lily has just come back to Cedar Ridge after losing her job, she's also still dealing with the death of her Sister who died in Cedar Ridge some years before.
I'm looking forward to the next books in the series.
The story of a young woman, Lily, returning to her small, mainly caring community, where there are no secrets, everyone knows and looks out for each other. It tells of siblings with the same abusive absent father, brought together at an adventure resort run and owned by this family. The handsome brothers are also part emergency services from mountain rescue to firemen. Superbly fit and protective of family and friends overstepping boundaries come up against their mother, leading to some hilarity. It describes the re- awakening of deep feelings between Lily and Aiden who finally admit their llove. The gentle teasing, the feelings for the whole community, especially the family makes one want to be there.
I look forward to reading more of Jill's work.
This is light romance with a second chance theme. It is filled with amusing moments especially as Lily is always having to be rescued or is only seen by Aidan at her worst. You are never in doubt that the two of them will overcome their barriers and come together by the end but the process of them getting there is entertaining. The book is enhanced by the fact that there are some excellent descriptions of the outside environment and the activities that they enjoy together.
This is obviously the first in what will be a series based on the family.
