James and Elise forever!

This story was fantastic! You get to see a totally different side of Elise and James all while Elise was still being, well...Elise! Action right from the beginning with a few warm and fuzzy moments in between. This story follows James and Elise and what they have been up to since Genesis, it is definitely not what you'd think. We find Elise giving birth alone, well aside from a few assassins but Elise is used to that stuff why should giving birth be any different. What is different though is that James is nowhere to be found. The thought of Elise being a mom almost seems too far fetched, but the author fit it into the story line seemlessly. As I was reading I could just picture Elise going into battle with that baby strapped to her back ready to kick the ass of anyone who stood in her way of finding James. Elise finds out quickly the world is not what is was supposed to be after Genesis and she is not "when" she is supposed to be. Elise decides she needs to do something so she reaches out to an old ally who is surprisingly still alive. Yay for appearances by old friends! He helps her out by assigning a shifter to be of assistance to her and the baby. I really liked Henry, poor guy went way above and beyond to help out from nurse to babysitter. Some of the scenes were almost comical and they just made me like him that much more. The problem now is while Elise was out the baby was kidnapped by another old but not so friendly anymore ally. Seems he wants something from Elise and James and the only way that he can get it is to have their human forms die and send them back to being Gods. Of course if that happens, they cannot raise their baby together. The ending of the book looks like it is going to be a sad one, but you know Elise, she can't let that happen, she needs things to end her way. I was pleasantly surprised with what seems like an HEA, but don't be fooled it may not be after all.........It was great to see several older characters again even if some of them were not who you thought they were.

Elise is one of my favorite characters, so it was great to see her back! I was especially enthused because the series about Marion was the first by Reine that I dropped in the middle, because I just couldn’t care about the main characters. This book adds a whole new dimension to her personality, though all the old grit is still there. She and James do the time warp, and it’s fun the watch them grapple with the new everyday tech. And I guess the final lesson is that no good deed goes unpunished.

Elise's character is well developed and I love reading about her and her many lives. I highly recommend reading the Descent series and the Ascent series, though it is not necessary to enjoy this one.

The characters react in ways that are completely out of character for them. Plot points are brought up, then abandoned without explanation. I would recommend nearly anything by this author, but not this.
