And, this is one of the incredibly rare times that I found that the second book was better than the first! (I know, right? I love when this happens!!)
Sam Vives is a time-traveler. Well, anaccidental time-traveler.
He barely made it back from an time leap (during which he was a pirate captain) and is in desperate need of training.
Luckily, his Uncle Andrew is also a Displacer (aka a time-traveler) and has taken on the mentor roll. And despite his initial luck, Sam has a lot to learn.
Overall, the plot flowed really well in this one, I really enjoyed all the tidbits about time travel that Brading includes and the humor was spot-on for me.
I cannot wait for book 3!!
When he returns from the eighteenth century pirates adventure he had accidentally stumbled across his uncle who is there to help him understand what had happened. He teaches him the rules and consequences.
Sam is a displaced and able to travel through time. There are more people like him that can also travel through time using their gifts. This book is about Sam's training, mixed in with his normal life. It introduces new characters and keeps the adventure going.
Thoroughly enjoyed this one.

In the previous story, Pirate's Heir, there was more pirate adventure than science-fiction. This story is the opposite. The laws of their time-travel, or displacements, is better defined in this story. You can debate the time travel theory as much as you like (and many of us do), but at least Simon Brading doesn't violate his own rules. To the consternation of the Elders, Sam Vives (the main character), seems to break a few rules without even trying. He does things he shouldn't be able to do. Some are understandably worried while others are hopeful.
Sam goes on two adventures in this story. He trains in Okinawa (a beautiful island. btw) and treks across Egypt (you saw that coming by the cover). What you don't see coming are the many delightful movie references tossed into the story here and there. We also discover two items mentioned by the fortune teller in the previous story. Some of the prophecy is identified, but even the Elders don't know the whole prophecy in the part of the series.
I highly recommend Books 1 & 2 in the Displacers series. I look forward to reading the third.
