Lady Juliana knows she is in danger. But does she really need a bodyguard?
One abduction and suddenly her brother, the Duke, begins treating her like a damsel in distress. Lady Juliana, however, is anything but – she is a woman who knows her own mind, and is determined to make a difference. But just how is she supposed to work for her secret society protecting animals when she is being followed around by a dashing detective?
Matthew Archibald has taken on many jobs in the past, but never did he think he would be playing nursemaid to the spoiled sister of a duke. Little does he realize, however, that there is much more to the fiery, spirited woman than he initially thought.
Matthew soon finds his focus wavering as he tries to determine just who is threatening the Remington family. But the closer he comes to Lady Juliana, the less he is able to stay professional. Will his growing feelings for her come to endanger them both?
This steamy Regency romance series is best read in order.

About the author

Ellie has always loved reading, writing, and history. For many years she has written short stories, non-fiction, and can hardly believe that she is now living out her dream writing historical romance.
In every era there is the chance for romance, and Ellie enjoys exploring many different time periods, cultures, and geographic locations. No matter when or where, love can always prevail. She has a particular soft spot for the bad boys of history, and can't help but write of strong, feisty heroines.
Ellie and her husband love nothing more than spending time at home with their two sons and Husky cross. Ellie can typically be found at the lake in the summer, pushing the stroller all year round, and, of course, with her computer in her lap or a book in hand.
Hearing from readers always makes her day!

Now that that's out of the way: This is a charming book overall, but falls just short of excellence. The main problem may be my high expectations; I love the Regency detective trope and really liked Matthew in the last book. However, here I felt like there was too much focus on Juliana's love for animals and her secret group meetings (I wonder when her brother will discover she's still attending those?) and not enough on Matthew's background and what makes him tick. I'm all for working class H's who come from rough and tumble backgrounds, so I was ready for Matthew to show off his gritty side. However, nothing is revealed about his past. Key question: Why did he become a detective? He hints about a violent encounter when he teaches Juliana to defend herself, and this could have been a really interesting discussion, but nothing becomes of it. His family are all warm, kind people and everything seems great with his relationship with them. They're what we'd call today "blue collar" folk, so there is definitely a clash of classes going on, but it's all glossed over. Not even his sisters speak to Juliana about what drives Matthew.
Another thing that bugged me was Giles's, Juliana's brother's, high-handedness. I wasn't a big fan of Giles in the last book--and he was the MMC. Here he's an accusatory snob toward the man who's his half-brother, a doctor who seems like a really decent guy. I thought the whole idea that Giles wanted to cast doubt on a man with a stellar reputation--who should be able to supply many character references, btw--was petty and vindictive. Their relationship is not resolved at the end.
I did think Juliana and Matthew had good chemistry, and although she's a bit spoiled and naive, her heart seems to be in the right place. Their scenes together are nicely steamy. I also thought the vegetarian storyline was unique, although we never got to find out what impact the pamphlets they designed had on the public. Maybe in the next book.
Overall: This is a pleasant, quick read, I just wish Matthew had been sufficiently fleshed out and the storyline with the half-brother had been more satisfactory. I realize Lewis is the H of the next book, so his relationship with the Remingtons may change, but I really don't like all the loose ends.
Steam level: 3.
Jules has her own way of looking at things. During all someone is still after Jules and no one knows why.
What an amazing story. I don't like books with cliff hangers but the way Ellie writes this series
each book does have an ending for the couple, but the mystery and who is trying to hurt the family is carried from book to book. Each book has more clues and secrets found. It's really keeps you trying to figure out who it could be and why. Their father had a lot of enemies and wasn't liked by anyone.
Hopefully we will learn a lot more in the next book which I know who it will be about.
Someone the family didn't even know about till Matthew found him.
This is a fast-paced book with lots of twists and turns, secrets, who done it, passion and
misunderstandings too. This is a steamy read for those who like to know.
I received and ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it. You don't want to miss this series, it's one of the best....
