Jonathan Hickman (born September 3, 1972, South Carolina) is an American comic book writer and artist. He is known for creating the Image Comics series The Nightly News, The Manhattan Projects and East of West, as well as working on Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four, FF and S.H.I.E.L.D. titles. In 2012, Hickman ended his run on the Fantastic Four titles to write Avengers and New Avengers, as part the "Marvel NOW!" relaunch. In 2013, Hickman wrote a six-part miniseries, Infinity, plus Avengers tie-ins for Marvel Comics. As of 2015, he is writing the crossover event Secret Wars.

I actually read this Secret Wars story arc when it came out issue by issue back in 2015, but I decided to reread it given everything going on in the MCU. I quickly remembered how much I didn't really love the plot. It was bit clunky and confusing to me, not my favorite garphic novel out there. It is still Marvel thought so I'll only subtract 1 star.

If you want a physical edition rather than a Kindle edition (as a comic reader for 30+ years I still prefer reading comics printed on paper), I recommend the paperback version.
The paperback copy I purchased was in excellent condition. The binding was firm, no loose pages or cracks in the spine. The paper was glossy and high quality. When reading I was never distracted by any physical flaws. My one complaint is that the map of Battleworld is printed in middle of the volume so some of it is lost in the binding, but that didn't affect my ability to enjoy the story.
Supplemental material included a gallery of all the variant covers (and there were lots for this series). They also included the Free Comic Book Day Secret Wars #0 at the end, despite the fact that its story is more of a prelude than a postlude. As far as I can tell the hardcover doesn't have any other special bonuses. This is not a situation where the publisher cut corners producing the paperback, but the hardcover is the "prestige" version. The hardback doesn't give you any more material or any better reading experience, but it costs more.
Concerning the story told in this volume, I would call it a satisfying bow to the long story Hickman told through various Marvel titles. I cannot say how much you would enjoy it without reading his Fantastic Four or Avengers books before. Having read them this felt like a brilliant capstone on a monumental work. Esad Ribic's art has a touch of high fantasy to gives this story that epic quality. Ive Svorcina deserves mention for his color work which deeply enhances every page. Even among the universe of Marvel stories, this felt special, like a myth superheroes would tell. I loved it!

Great story! Maybe some spoilers for Marvel phase 4….? Maybe?! Artwork is great! The story is told in somewhat of a non-linear fashion and I read a few reviews complaining about the book being confusing. It is a longer book and it jumps around a bit for backstory and context. Overall I found it enjoyable and fast reading.
4 stars for a little bit of a lack of action. Also, the page art goes far enough into the center that you’ll find yourself creasing the binding to see the full pages. Obviously that is to be expected with large novels.

Starts great and has good moments but has a whole lot of needless exposition over and over and bad pacing making it feel a real drag. I’ve many many books that I’ve collected for over 30 years and some I fly through due to enjoying them so much, this one I had to fight through the half way point to get to the end.

Overall it felt like it wanted to be the watchmen, the watchmen worked with its exposition and slow pacing as it had fewer characters and it suited the world, this book tries that pace but its set on “battle world” and has next to no feeling of that world being a “battle” for a long time (near the start you get literally one panel saying “oh yeah there is an ultron army killing everyone” as an example) and it jumps around a lot, parts that could have been extended upon such as the heroes exploring a new world and you exploring it with them were just skipped completely yet you get ten pages of doom taking like thor to say how hard it feels to be a god or in some cases almost fully blank pages with one sentence.

It all just feels off, writing for writings sake and saying very little of worth. Highlight is Mr Sinister who brought a lot of life to the story when he was on the page.

Marvel event books are very hit and miss, it’s not as much of a miss as some of the others but it’s below average.

This is far from the best or one of the greatest Marvel novels. It's good and no better than that. It carries a few interesting concepts and the battle sequence layout in the book is sometimes out of sync ro how you'd expect

One of the best comicses I have ever read! Unfortunately, a lot of elements will be confusing unless you are prepared for what is going on. Two worlds that have similar characters who are differnet in the same time etc. I myself read only Ultimate Spider-man, Ultimate X-man and single stories like Old man Logan so some things were not clear. However, if you are a big comics fun no doubt that you will enjoy it.
The edition itself is quite good. Big enough so worth its price.
