About the author

Join Brenda at one of 32 stops when she goes on a two-month traveling bookstore (Airstream) tour across the United States—from Sacramento to Connecticut—in April and May of 2023 to celebrate the release of THE SUMMER ON THE ISLAND, which comes out April 11th. It was a shocking experience that jump-started Brenda Novak's career as a bestselling author--she caught her day-care provider drugging her children with cough syrup to get them to sleep all day. That was when Brenda decided she needed to quit her job as a loan officer and help make a living from home.
"When I first got the idea to become a novelist, it took me five years to teach myself the craft and finish my first book," Brenda says. But she sold that book, and the rest is history. Her novels have made the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists and won many awards, including eight Rita nominations, the Book Buyer's Best, the Book Seller's Best, the Silver Bullet and the National Reader's Choice Award.
Brenda and her husband, Ted, live in Sacramento and are proud parents of five children--three girls and two boys. When she's not spending time with her family or writing, Brenda is usually playing pickleball or raising funds for diabetes research (her youngest son has this disease). So far, Brenda has raised $2.6 million!

She is quite surprised and maybe even embarrassed to find that the "Raphael" who is in charge of the renovations, is none other than Rafe. He is her new next door neighbor and was also her first love interest. He had a bad boy reputation and rejected her advances when he found out that she was only 16 instead of the 18 she had said she was. Rafe has now grown up and has settled down. He is running his own business and raising his young blind daughter, yet he can't help being attracted to the grown up Maisey. Especially when she "throws" herself at him when she is feeling unable to cope with her "life lessons".
While Maisey works to rebuild her life and her writing career, she must also deal with her controlling Mother and help her brother deal with his addictions. One day Rafe brings her a box of photos hidden in the wall of the cabin he is renovating. She is completely shocked to find that the girl in the pictures are not her. She has vague memories of a sister much the same as her brother does. But her Mother adamantly denies it. Maisey strains her family relationships almost to the breaking point as she tries to unravel the mystery.
This is the first novel I have read by Brenda Novak. I was kept glued to every page as the mystery of the pictures and the attraction between Maisey and Rafe unfold. I definitely want to read the next novel in the series and see where Ms. Novak will take me on Fairham Island.
What I didn't really care for is simply based on personal taste. When I want to escape into a novel, I don't want to be face-to-face with reality. Novak's characters were very complex and believable--and that was the problem, for me. I find it very plausible that, under the circumstances of her life, Maisey would vacillate so much. It was also very believable and realistic that Rafe would react the way he did to her mixed signals.
That said, I personally did not enjoy the back and forth so much. It was over 60% of the way through the book before Maisey decided (kind of, sort of, although MAYBE she still loved her ex?) to get serious about Rafe. I can understand, with her background, that she'd have major baggage. That baggage was very realistically portrayed by a very talented writer. That said, when I am wanting to be entertained or want to escape, I don't want to deal with someone's baggage making them waffle between the ex-husband and the new interest.
But again, that's just personal preference in a story-line. Novak is a talented writer without question and it is a well-crafted story.
This book has such an unexpected ending. It leaves you craving for the next story in the saga. I loved the twists and turns the story took. Once you start to believe one thing another thing happens that makes you rethink your own belief. There are so many things that make Maisey a person we can all identify with one way or another. Keith, her brother, is someone everyone has either known, or knows and you understand why Maisey wants to be there for him. There are other characters that are identifiable too but you MUST read the book to see exactly what I am talking about.
Brenda Novak has done it again! Another fantastic book written by an author that can grab the readers attention and keep it until the very end. I can’t say enough about the talent in her writing and the feelings her books invokes as you read. This a a definite MUST read!
