This was… not great. It’s like a watered down Bram Stoker’s Dracula without any actual vampires filmed as a 7hour long movie. I’d be glad for a commercial at this point. Only repeated heavy petting followed by rejection and jealousy and implied danger but no action, no conversation of substance, no forward momentum. I skimmed and then I just gave up. I don’t even care if they resolve the uninteresting mystery, or consummate the uninspiring lust.

Isabella Fairmont is an orphan that has been taken in by her uncle and cousin. She is shadowed with her past of a mother who was ruled by desire instead of making a proper match. Isabella has sworn that she will not make the same mistake as her mother as is determined to find a proper husband and be a respectable wife. She is being courted by a historian Mr. Knighton who is just what she needs. Things are going fine until one night she is at a ball and gets introduced to Lord Black who is everything she doesn't want. The only problem is she can't seem to deny herself from him.

I liked this story although I felt that there was a little too much going on. Instead of making it just a love story the author tried to add in the story of the Knights of the Templar, which made the story confusing at times. I liked the concept but I just don't know if it quite worked. I did like Isabella and Lord Black and I thought their characters were well developed. The story just kept switching back and forth too much between the mystery plot and the love plot.

I give this 3 stars.

I normally like light and "fluffy" romances to the dark, dramatic ones, but from the first chapter, Ms. Featherstone had me hooked. Sure it was all about hearts being drawn to each other, desperation and denial of what she was feeling... but darn it if it didn't work! Lord Black was dark and mysterious, but from his first scene, we also saw a human, almost vulnerable side to him. Yes, Lucy denied what she was feeling with him, but it didn't annoy me and make me think there was no real reason for the way she kept trying to resist him. The chemistry between them was explosive and so were the feelings. It didn't feel like it was all about lust, but a genuine connection and affection existed there.

If you're not a fan of gothic type books, don't let that stop you from buying this book. This was written in a way to set up a couple of sequels. I can't wait to read Lord Black's two friend's books; the duke and the scot.

This book started out excellent, then it fell flat, the h was TSTB but the H was wonderful. The book has a paranormal feel to it, this was not a bad thing but it was so boring I thought I was buying an erotic historical romance had been shelved 8 times as such on Good Reads but instead I got a book that was a melodrama, annoying h who wrote a story about DEATH and was obsessed with the same. The author is a terrific writer but the story was a let down and I won't be reading Lucy's story she is such a mess a former lover she is obsessed with who is dead or maybe not,she got possessed in this book, sigh, like I said melodrama.

It is always an ominous sign of things to come when an author gives her male lead a title like "the Earl of Black", and respects her readers so little that she can't even be bothered to do basic look ups (I believe Orpheus was searching for his wife, Eurydice, and not Hades' wife, Persephone), so I was not expecting much, but this one is especially irritating - not just because the 'plot' seems to belong to one of those Minerva Press novels so often referred to in Regency romances, or because the writer's prose is so overheated that it borders on the ridiculous - but because, when you strip away all the hyperbole, I think this writer actually might be able to write. She just needs to relax a bit, and put more of her effort into plot and characterization, and a little less into synonyms and sex. (kindle ebook review)

This is the first book in a series and it sees the first of the guardians Lord Black find love with a girl he first clapped eyes on in Yorkshire (my home county wahoo!!) 2 years ago by the name of Isabella Fairmont. His steady seduction of a girl he already won but must re-win in the eyes of society since he's a recluse and she already has a suitor vying for her hand... An archeologist by the name of Wendell Knighton. But they face not just the mysterious evil unknown opponents known only as The House of Orphius who seek some early Christian relics to destroy Earth as they knew it, they face Isabella's past which has built a fear in her about passion and succumbing to it. This tale is a mixture of Huntik,Indian Jones, James Bond and steamy romance that makes you wish you had a Lord Black next to you. Next up in this saga is the poor Duke who is denied by the woman he loves. My only beef is that it says Orphius is Persephone's lover... I'm not perfect on my Greek myth but I don't recall those 2 being lovers, I thought it was Orphius and Euridecy. If anyone can enlighten me I'd be grateful.
