I grew up with them, the creatures of the night, the blood suckers, the monsters. I knew vampires before I could walk - not that I knew what they really were, just that they weren’t really like me.
I was human, just like my parents. And when I turned eighteen, I decided to work for the vampires after college, too. We had worked for their nest for over five generations, and I wanted to continue that tradition. But then, the master of the nest died. He’d practically raised me, my mother, my father, and everyone before us. He had looked at humans working for the nest as part of the nest. We were part of the family, even though we weren’t immortal or drank blood. He kept tight control, and accidents were so rare that I had never seen one happen.
The new master of the nest is not so kind or good at the job.
We need help. I need help. The new master is letting the vampires get out of control. Bodies are starting to pile up and even the other staff are at risk.
I’m Everly Abbott, and I need a solution to this before more people get killed. But, the solution might be more dangerous than the problem.

Suddenly, Everly is faced with a danger she had never thought of, and it will take as much ingenuity as possibly to survive it all.
This is the first book in the series, so while it doesn’t exactly end on a cliffhanger, it does have a great big unfinished plot line.
Everly is a computer geek, whose traumatic introduction to the horror that vampires can commit, leaves her struggling in fear.
She works hard to try and keep her co-workers safe, but it leaves her alone, with very little recourse.
We do meet an intriguing vampire, Alexius, about whom we know very little even by the end of the book, and about whom several very interesting questions arise, but I don’t want to say too much because it’s far more fun to read it!
This is an interesting paranormal/urban fantasy book, with absorbing characters and an engaging plot-line. While the first part of the book is quite dark, leaving the reader to feel the hopelessness of the situation that Everly experiences, the second half takes off and brings it all to a satisfying, if incomplete conclusion.
That’s not a bad thing, it just means that the reader will be dying to know what’s going to happen next!
There is very little romance in this book, which makes sense when taken in context, so be ready for that too.
If you enjoy urban fantasy, or paranormal fantasy (ongoing plot line, slow burn or no romance) then you will like this book!
What I enjoyed about the book is that Everyly is a different kind of fighter. She doesn't start out as a supernatural with abilities that come with that which is a nice change of pace. We get characters that we just hate because of what they do and horrors they subject others too. Everly for a good part of it has to figure things out alone and covering for how her mother actually died. This is what didn't really make sense to me because with all that was going on, with the vampires killing on the regular and new psycho master and his lover, surely you would know that foul play was involved even without her admitting it?
Before actions can be taken against this now chaotic nest, proof is needed of their wrongdoings. The person able to act on that and carry out "justice" is Alexius. He is a very old vampire known to the vampires as someone to be feared. He was also the father to the former master of the nest. Everly works with him to provide proof of what's been going on so he can take care of the nest while also finding out what really happened to his son.
Alexius and Everly work well together and it will be interesting to see how their relationship develops. The author has planned for 9 books in the series so it seems we will have plenty of time to get to know them.
Even if you are new to Banet or have read other series of her Tribunal books this book will be a good read of the genre.
I’d also like to say just how wonderful it was to have a rare female character who builds computers. Banet skips the gamer girl sex kitten tropes and dives right into a believable character, fully fleshed with idiosyncrasies, flaws, weaknesses, and yet a deep and true sense of loyalty. Everly’s anxiety disorder is an essential part of each decision she makes, which both highlights why she doesn’t see some things and just how incredibly powerful she really is to make the choices she does despite her flaws. She doesn’t understand people, and so she makes mistakes with handling people that are true to character, despite her loyalty and inherently good nature. The character building in this book is really thoughtfully done.

Read this book. You won't regret it.

Everly has been working for vampires all of her life. She's human, but she has known about them since she was a child and she loves what she does for them. But when the master of the nest dies and the new one allows his acmpire to go on killing sprees, Everly needs to stop them and that means allying herself with the boogeyman of the vampires, Alexius the Hunter.

Disliked getting to the end and not having the 2nd instalment ready to go.
I would recommend this book for people in their twenties and older. Though younger adults would enjoy this series too.
I am holding back a higher rating until I read the next instalment. I like the female lead and want to see her get vengeance.
