About the author

I grew up on a farm outside Washington Court House, Ohio. As a kid, I liked to read a lot, and was also involved in 4-H, various bands and choirs (I played flute and piano), church youth group, the school newspaper, and a quiz-bowl type team. I was pretty disastrous as an athlete, although I did run track one year in high school. After graduating from Miami University (of Ohio), I worked as a newspaper copy editor in Fort Wayne, Indiana; a newspaper reporter in Indianapolis; and a part-time community college instructor and freelance writer in Danville, Illinois, before my first book was published. I've moved around a lot as an adult, having also lived in Luxembourg (during a college semester abroad) and in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. Several years ago, I moved back to Ohio with my husband and kids; we now live in Columbus, Ohio. My husband trains investigative journalists, and my kids are in high school, so there's always a lot going on around our house.

Glad I reread this book. It shows how fragile the aftermath of a movement can be. How easy it is to scapegoat a group and how easy it is for much of the old guard to remain. Yet, it can be understood by someone that's rather young. Worth a reread every so often.
Well, there are some slow moments in the book about Luke's life on the run among the others. This book ends abruptly without really clarifying the ending or what's to become of major characters throughout the seven book series. What changes have finally occurred in allowing third children to live legally?
The series is original in that concept. The whole series reminded me of George Orwell's novel, 1984, where the people were controlled by the government in all aspects of their lives. In this series, it's more believable. While it ended as it should, I think it could have been better in the final pages. I feel like it ended on a wimper than a bang. Maybe an epilogue about a year after the political uprising would have helped to see where the characters like Luke would be and hope for the better.
Although this last installment is a bit slower than the rest it's still a very strong read and definitely ends with a big bag. Captivating as the story comes full circle, returning the focus once again to Luke, who is clearly not the same boy who we were first introduced to.
The Shadow Children series is a touching and exciting ride from AMONG THE HIDDEN (Shadow Children #1) to the long awaited conclusion in AMONG THE FREE (Shadow Children #7). Haddix has undeniably created an inspiring story where humanity and basic common decency is put to the test.

Luke Garner is a shadow child, the third child in a family. In a world who's supplies are stretched to the limit, the government sets a law that families are only allowed to have two children, any third children discovered by the population police will be taken and or killed. Luke has been fighting a battle to over throw the population police from the inside out with the help of his friends, Nina, and Trey.
Will the shadow children be freed, or shot down like so many others before?
I'm sorry to say this final book did not impress me. Not like I wanted it to.
Ok book.
