Inside the castle, Edana and the resistance attempt to thwart Valerius’s plan to give people magic by taking away their souls and turning them into soldiers driven by insatiable rage. But fear of her dangerous new magic holds her back, and navigating the political landscape might cause her to lose sight of herself.
And Mira, empress of Mydrost, intends to challenge Valerius and his troops over Temidorus, but to do so, she must forge an alliance with Queen Minerva of Sunniva, Renfred’s older sister. But the two leaders’ clash of opinions and cultures might sink them before they’ve begun.
They must trust in themselves and each other before Valerius’s hunt tears the veil between this realm and the next.

This book continues the story of Aurelia, the healer prophesied to end magic in the land, Edana, the first seer born in generations, and Brennus, an elemental gifted, and the first male born with magic in centuries. After the Battle of Tolm Sert, Aurelia and Edana are taken prisoner, Brennus is presumed dead. Aurelia and Edana now serve Valerius of Krovolia, their conqueror. They must survive and perhaps may bring down Valerius from within. Book 2 expands on other characters in this world. We see Renfred, Aurelia's heartfriend, mature. We get a glimpse into the backstory of Mira, Empress of Mydros, and how she came to be friends with Brennus. We get some insight into Queen Minerva of Sunnivan and why she seems so cold and overly cautious. There are also hints at the plan of the Goddess, though our heroes often mistake her message. Carrie is excellent in her world building and characterizations.
Primarily, we are made to feel the powerlessness, hopelessness, and frustration of an occupied people. The fear of an enemy perceived as invincible. Aurelia searches for a way to restore magic to her people in the hope that will allow them to defeat the Krovolians. Edana tries to frustrate Valerius' desire to create ostavly, the superhuman beserkers made of perverted magic. Yet every action they take seems to worsen their situation, to strengthen Valerius.
This is epic fantasy done very well. Carrie is an author who deserves a much wider audience. If you have read "The Dying of the Golden Day" certainly you must read "The Shadow of the Endless Night". If you haven't read Book 1 I encourage you to do so. I am impatiently awaiting Book 3.
