And I see other people's images with no ad!? Where can I get the Netflixless books??

And I see other people's images with no ad!? Where can I get the Netflixless books??

This is a true Young Adult Fantasy series. It doesn't go into too much violence, romance, or graphic language, and it tends to be predictable at times, but what makes this series so wonderful is the incredible world and characters that Bardugo has built. This whole concept of the Grishaverse—the Shadow Fold and the monsters that lurk there, the First and Second Armies, the magic orders... the story just sweeps you up.
After reading Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, as well as the other Grishaverse short stories (still need to read King of Scars), it really is incredible how Bardugo brought this world and these characters to life. It's this irresistible mix of fable and good ole fantasy adventure.
I can't wait to see what Netflix does with the series (and really looking forward to the author's cameo when it comes out!).
Mal also is very underdeveloped and we don't know much about him other than Alina and him grew up like siblings in the same orphanage, and are best friends.... and (still unrealistically) he's also a love interest that is also very invested in the main character. Other than that "he's very good at tracking people." Okay. How lucky for Alina! He's so bland, he has very little backstory, faults, or anything that would make you otherwise feel anything toward him whatsoever.
This series left me wanting more, but not in a good way.
Shadow & Bone: 3.4 out of 5 stars.
Siege & Storm: 3.6 out of 5 stars
Ruin & Rising: 3.2 out of 5 stars.
I thought this trilogy was a good time. Great world building, good characters, cool magic system/abilities. I recommend this trilogy. Especially if you plan on reading Six of Crows which was amazing. Sets the world up nicely. The ending to this trilogy was satisfying enough.
What I didnt like:
The main character Alina is pretty weak and almost useless through the entire trilogy. Despite having this "epic" ability she never really does anything with it. Someone always has to save the day, every single time. It got frustrating by book 3.
Be ready for a Deus Ex Machina to save the main characters EVERY TIME they are in a hopeless situation, some random person or event saves them and it was always predictable.
The Villain was very strong but chose the dumbest way to accomplish his goals. Someone so powerful could have come up with atleast 3 other solutions that were better than what he tried to do.
I wish this was a Duology instead of a trilogy. A little more action in each book would have helped.

Shadow and Bone features all the standard tropes of bad YA: it's got a supposedly plain-Jane-but-super-powerful gullible protagonist, a ridiculously well-written villain, and a convenient love triangle to boot. Despite all this, the story WORKED. And I am so glad I kept reading to Book 2, because that's when things get INSANELY good. Book 3 is spectacular in this regard as well. I devoured these books over 4 very manic days, and I don't regret it one bit. Definitely consider buying this trilogy if you're looking for a dark yet entertaining foray into younger-themed fantasy. The box set is nice for a collector's item, but the box itself arrived slightly damaged in my case -- fortunately the books within were perfectly intact.
A note about the books received in this version - definitely consider investing in this boxed set because each of the books has a little bonus story/POV chapter. It's also got a few pages of author interviews and discussion questions (which I didn't find very helpful since the discussion points seemed a little like school assignments). But the bonus chapter/snippet at the end of each book was amazing and really appreciated. The covers are also really pretty, worthy of collectors items except for the ugly (permanent) Netflix stickers that are always seen on these soon-to-be Netflix series books. I must really commend the book art designer though as these covers were stunning aside from the Netflix promotion!
