The humans of the Duchy of Terra Series are junior members of outer alliance which has become embroiled in the affairs of even larger core alliances. The overt mission of Morgan in this volume shifts to the prevention of a new war between several of these larger core powers, but still involves much of the exploration of past eras contained in the prior volumes. Morgan and crew find much more than expected and also, of course, manage to prevent the war.
Rather than starting the series with this volume, I would strongly encourage any new readers to start with the beginning of this trilogy, Relics of Eternity, if not the first of all eight volumes. You will be richly rewarded with a deep and unique universe filled with mystery and plenty of classic space opera action.
This puts her and in a very special position for some of the shadowy powers that that have been shaping the growth of humanity and the Imperium.
Teaming up again with academics and ancients Morgan is about to risk her ship to learn the dark truth at the heart of the the last 50,000 years of galactic history.
And it is a truth that shatters previous ideas of the galaxy's firstborn's fate and bounds on how bad it could get.
I very much enjoyed the first half of this book ... then I binge read the second half unable to convince myself to put it down. Nothing about Glynn Stewart's writing has become any less captivating. And I have found that this universe is playing in my mind even when I have set the book aside.
I don't want to spoil any of this for you, and I think you should snap this book up ASAP!
I received an electronic advanced review copy of this book in exchange for my honest review ... then I paid for it on Patreon. And following my usual level of slightly rabid fandom I promptly Pre-Ordered this book on Amazon as soon as that is available too!
Look ... I get you are busy and don't have time for reading ... well, stop wasting time reading reviews and just buy the book and read that instead. Then you can spend as long as you want to read it. You can use it as a reward to get you through whatever other un-fun nonsense you have on your schedule. Also ... there is more to life than the grind. Make sure that you are making time for yourself to enjoy some of this life. I assure it is fleeting.
Captain Morgan Casimir and Dr. Rin Dunst are given a new mission to find and secure for the Imperium, an ancient Alava fleet near the Laian-Wendira front. If the mythical fleet even exists. They aren’t the only ones searching for the rumored fleet and they find much more than expected. During their search, they learn that some key things they thought they knew about the Alava are dead wrong. They discover information about the Alava’s ancient enemy and that the Laian-Wendira conflict isn’t nearly as straightforward as the Imperium thought. This book fills in and puts into perspective information about the Alava and nicely sets up what appears will be a desperate struggle in the next book.
A thoroughly entertaining story that has all the twists and turns you’d expect from a Glynn Stewart story.
I received an ARC for my review and enjoyed the story enough to buy my own copy to support the author
Shadows of the Fall picks up shortly after the events in Relics of Eternity. The remnants of technology left behind by the Alava, a precursor civilization that fell 50,000 years in the past, still linger - dangerous and unpredictable but of incalculable value. Hints and legends point to a lost Alava fleet of warships, a treasure trove of technology, but why the fleet was lost, and what drove the Alava to take the incredibly arrogant risk that resulted in the fall of their civilization - a hidden terror lost for 50,000 years.
It is strongly recommended that readers start with the first book in the series - Terran Privater and read the stories in sequence. While any book in the series can be read as a standalone novel, the threads and arcs are interwoven throughout the series. Hints and brief mentions in the early books are like little gems that only really shine once the larger meaning is uncovered in later books.
A strongly recommend series, by an excellent and prolific author, Mr. Stewart's books never fail to delight and entertain.
Disclaimer - I have received nothing of value for this review, other than an advanced reader copy.
