Don't miss Shadows, Dawson Black’s story in Jennifer L. Armentrout's bestselling Lux series, now available as a standalone in print for the first time!
"An unmissable series!" –Samantha Young, New York Times bestselling author of On Dublin Street
“This is the stuff swoons are made of.” —Wendy Higgins, New York Times bestselling author of Sweet Evil
The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life-form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane. Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.
Bethany can't deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren't a complication she wants, she can't stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she's drawn in. Captivated. Lured. Loved.
Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence…and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can't stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

Why didn't I like it? Like all YA the relationship between the characters developed so fast and so unreal that I just couldn't get my head around it. I like that they are Aliens and not Fae or Demons. That was a change but the story was just plain and a little boring.
I won't be reading the rest.

There is a different opinions on when this prequel novella should be read during the Lux Series. A lot of people feel like it should be read after Obsidian since it might be spoilery, however, I have to disagree. I started my reread with Shadows and for me it worked. It was nice to have a backstory regarding what happened with Dawson and Bethany. It also gives you a better understanding of Daemon’s actions in Obsidian. That said, there no reading order that works for everyone, so you should see what works for you! I’ve read this series more than 6 years ago as a teenager, and even now as an adult I still love it just as much. The writing of this novella is different than the others in the series since it is just a short novella, but it worked for me. I really loved Dawson and Bethany’s love story and the rest of the series only gets better from here!
I enjoyed this book, and its concept. There were very few typos, so that was a plus. I almost gave it 4 stars, however I have two major issues with this book that knocked it down a bit.
1. At times the book went too fast, and seemed to skip through time. One of my pet peeves with any story is when the author does too much "telling" and not enough illustrating with his/her words. This book tended to do this at times. The story ends up becoming impersonal, and falls flat. This book was great in places, but this "issue" occurred too often for my liking. This being said, I guess because of the parts where the author DID illustrate the connection between the characters and the characters themselves, I still ended up feeling for the characters and their problems.
2. I wanted to know more about what happened between Bethany and Dawson. After the ending, I was disappointed that Dawson did not confide in his siblings so they could help him figure it out. I thought this could have been a really interesting point for plot development, but it was just dropped -- which left things feeling unfinished. I am aware that this was a prequel to the first book, and I am hoping that because I read this one first (instead of starting with 1), some of these problems will be resolved in the later books. Too much was built up in this book for the author to not address these things later.
UPDATE: something else that has been bothering me... what happened to Beth's family? I've started book 1, but haven't seen any hints that there will be a resolution to these unanswered questions. Hoping I'm wrong! *fingers crossed!*
Shadows gives you the story about Dawson and Bethany who find themselves falling in love with each other while trying to hide Dawson's secret. Danger lurks around every corner that soon catches up to them. By the ending of the book you will be engrossed in the story that you will need to quickly pick up Obsidian to find out what comes next!
I'm thankful I read Shadows before reading Obsidian. It helped me understand Damien (Dawsons brother)and the Lux family for actions they make in the next book. You could without a doubt read Obsidian first but I would recommend reading Shadows first.
If you read the series without this, you won't notice a lack in the story, this is definitely a case of not knowing what your missing. That being said...you're totally missing out if you don't! There, I've told you, now you can't say you didn't know what you were missing... lol.
This book gives you such a huge insight into Dawson. It opens your eyes to so much of his personality and actions in the other books. It makes a big difference to see the man that Dee and Daemon describe in their memories. Also, what a difference it made in my opinion of Beth. Holy cow, I was having a hard time trusting her, but this brought so much into new perspective. The personality shift in both Beth and Dawson make their motivations so much clearer throughout the series.
It's also a very sweet love story. Dawson and Beth are both full of youthful love and passion.
You shouldn't be surprised...this is a cliffhanger...
This was written after the series began, but personally, when I do a read through, I start with this one. It's an entirely different experience if you do! Excellent, excellent addition.
