When River McAllister escaped from Shallow Hill, she left her innocence behind--and some of her sanity, too. Now she's rebuilding her life with her dream man and life couldn't be better.
Ryan Fitzgerald is everything you'd want in a man. Attractive, rich, an aspiring lawyer, and would do anything to keep River. But that's not the only thing that attracts her. It's his attentiveness, his possessiveness... maybe not so much his temper.
When her relationship takes a dark turn, Ryan's estranged brother, Mako, is the only one who sees it. He knows exactly what Ryan is capable of, and it's not the first time he had to be a knight in shining armor.
River came from Shallow Hill, though. She's never needed saving before. What Mako doesn't see, is that River is perfectly capable of taking care of herself.
The only one who should be scared is Ryan.

This story was something I haven’t read before. It’s a story that can be hard to stomach— it’s effed up. It’s pretty dang dark and bloody but it’s also something that people could experience in some form.
The heroine of this story went through it all. You name it and she lived it. Her resilience to the life she was handed is admirable. The hero of this story was so amazing and not in a conventional way. He was willing to cross some lines, but in ways that matter. I easily fell for him and his desire to show River how it should be standing beside someone that actually cares about her.
This story made me incredibly angry, hit me in the feels and left me satisfied with the outcome. The author shows you can be dealt the shittiest hand, but CHOOSE to be better. To be different than what you’re born into. To stand tall against all that wants to beat you down and WIN.
**ETA: no I wouldn’t condone all instances of this story in real life— again a lot of effed up things happen, but it’s fiction so yeah. Heed trigger warnings before going in! 💙
Shallow River is a dark psychological suspense that is absolutely heartbreaking and full of many twists and turns incorporating so many layers. It centers around River’s abusive relationship but also incorporates an unsolved murder and a slow burn steamy romance. This book was really hard to read at times but it was also eye opening in the sense that it sheds light on some very heavy topics while also giving the perspective of the victim/survivor. I really appreciated the way the author portrayed the survivor on such a deep level. I felt the romantic storyline was so well done and perfectly incorporated within the story. This book will truly make you feel all the things.
Tw: abuse, violence, sexual assault
There are parts of this story that I loved, and there are parts that I didn't enjoy as much. Of course, I knew what I was going into- there are both vague explicit depictions to triggering traumas that our heroine suffers as a child and as a an adult.
There is a little beauty to this book- a message of hope and survival couches in a very, very think layers of darkness and pain. The writing is beautiful, our heroine is captivating, and the story is unapologetic about painting a savage depiction of abuse. Emotionally- it strikes a chord, and one that will stick with me.
The pacing of the story was a bit challenging for me- I get why we have an immersive experience with our heroine's pain, why we have to experience her hopelessness, despair, and see her break bit by bit. This is the heart of this story- her survival, her resilience, her empowerment, finding the ray of hope. But oh my, it really hurts, its hard to read and experience. I think there is a fine line between exploring the dark pasts of characters experiences and exploiting them. The immersive component just felt too long for me, and the pace combined with the subject matter left me really pushing to get through it. I'm glad I did, but afterwards, I felt like the romance aspect suffered in contrast- couldn't quite find the range or impact in juxtaposition to the rest. Of course, that speaks to the emotional impact of the painful parts of this story.
Again, this story struck me, and I have been thinking about it since. This is not the kind of story someone "enjoys or doesn't enjoy"- it's a book you experience, and on that note, it succeeded. If you want to swim deeply in trauma, and think about the melancholy that is surviving it, and have no triggers- it's worth a read. Just be prepared to drown right along with our heroine- this is a hard and painful read.
I will definitely be reading all of the authors other works, and I highly recommend everyone else to do so as well.

River has a horrible childhood, and through all of her tragic experiences she becomes a strong woman. That's until she meets Ryan. This story really showed how someone who had a traumatic childhood, grew up to become strong, can still become a victim of domestic violence.
Ryan's brother Mako (whos a detective) is one of the only people who tries to help River and get her out of his brothers grip. This is all while he's trying to catch a serial killer.
This story comes with a lot of trigger warnings such as domestic violence, rape and violence. It's definitely an intense read, but one that is worth it.

This book deals with subjects of abuse and sexual abuse
The main character is a born survivor and is easy to love and feel empathy for her
This book is extremely graphic in places and is not for anyone who is of a sensitive demeanour
