I have to admit though that I do have some of the same reservations and possibly low-level skepticism for many shaman stories that I had when I read Carlos Castaneda's books. I liked them but I could not buy it all. So, though I read books in this area and am interested in the "susto"/soul retrival stories of the shamans of Peru and Navajo medicine men, there are many books in this genre that are tough for me to accept and that just don't feel right.
"The Shaman Toolkit" is one of those that fails to get by my skeptical self. When I read it, it just sounds like a poorly written self-help book. Many of the recommendations seem like they could have been lifted out of any pop psychology/new age, "think it so and it will happen" book. For example from this book: (1) "Automatic writing is a powerful way to find out what is hidden in your subconscious"; (2) "Finding your heart's desire"; (3) "Avoiding negative statements"; (4) "Aligning our thinking to create a positive future"; (5) "Observe how much love went into the creation of life"; (6) "It is time to embrace the principle of abundance and equality for all"; (7) "Sending up your wishes in a balloon"; (8) "Start your day with gratitude"; (9) "Replacing sabotaging thoughts with hopeful ones"; (10) "Come up with your own power statements"; (11) "Forgiveness is the key"; (12) "We are caretakers of the earth."
These don't sound like shamanic insights to me and without the "Shaman" term in the title and sprinkled throughout the text, I would not know that this wasn't a positive thinking book from the 1950's or a hootenanny tune from the '60s.
I really like Sandra Ingerman's stuff when it stays close to shamanic traditions and mythologies. This book wandered too far from those things and got lost in self-help platitudes.
Sandra talks in such a manner as to engage both your mind and heart,
in simple easy-to-read form. There is a natural flow with her words.
There are multiple suggestions you may pick from to add meaning and
focus to your day.
I encourage you to treat yourself and buy this book. I believe you will feel encouraged, anchored and connected to what's important, as we strive together to 'thrive in changing times'.

I think the intentions behind this book are excellent, and a lot of work has gone into it, so if you are looking for a generalised light and easy to follow self help book, with a nod towards shamanic practice, then this is ideal. It would help you tidy your thoughts up if you are stuck in a rut and have not used any visualisation techniques before, for example. I like Sandra Ingermans work, and have enjoyed a number of her other books, so I was a bit suprised by this one. It left me feeling that when push came to shove there were only really westernised modern techniques to work with. However, I also feel obliged to say that some how the shamanic twist has watered down some of the techniques, when journeying itself is so powerful. I feel bad about writing this review, and as Sandra would say, I don't want my negative thoughts about this book 'to go out into the universe'. However, I now have the hastle of returning it, because if I had realised what it actually was I would not have bought it in the first place.
