Enjoyable Sherlock Mystery

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review and all opinions expressed herein are mine.

Here, Watson is concerned that Sherlock, in his boredom, will return to using narcotics to stimulate his mind. He and Inspector Lestrade try to divert Sherlock's attention with a series of cases. The first five cases are quick and then more time is spent on the last case. The entire story is told from the point of view of Watson.

The first quick cases were okay but I thought a bit pedestrian for someone of Sherlock's intellect. However, it is the longer case which I really enjoyed. Overall, I really liked the writing style of this book - it is a bit formal but certainly encompasses the feel of the original Sherlock stories by Doyle. Sherlock is certainly his snarky superior self, who others, at times, endure but mostly love. And, of course, Watson is frequently flustered by his failure to have observed or surmised that which Sherlock could in the briefest of glances. But, that is all part of the fun.

I listened to this book - I found the narrator to be engaging. I did not notice any audio problems mentioned by other reviewers.

Matthew Simmonds absolutely nails it with his portrayal of the great detective. I'm a diehard devotee of the original Sherlock Holmes cannon and I'll admit I was a little skeptical. But if Matthew Simmonds' name wasn't on the front cover you'd think this was a lost story of Sir. Arthur's. It has taken a proud position on my book shelf among my vast collection of Sherlock Holmes books. It deserves to be in hard back.

This is certainly one of the very best Holmes pastiches out there. I agree with another reviwer that it is either on a par with Conan Doyle or actually betters it. There are none of the overworked cliches that are often found in other non-canon stories, the language used is true to Conan Doyle's style and the plot is clever and well constructed.

The story also manages to pull a few surprises. When you think that the tale is complete, you realise that there is one last mystery to solve - the solution certainly surprised me. How ingenious!

This is first rate material. Such a pleasure to read. As someone who makes a 'hobby' of reading and collecting Sherlock Holmes stories, this work stands out. I recommend it without reservation.

I have to say that I am not a fan of the Sherlock Holmes of Conan Doyle's, but Matthew Simmonds' book was recommended to me by an enthusiastic reader, so I thought I would give it a try. I am very pleased I did, because I enjoyed the book very much indeed - much more, frankly, than any of the Conan Doyle books. It starts with a number of brief mysteries, which Holmes solves relatively easily, but we then get the main mystery, which taxes him rather more. The dénouement is ingenious, and the plot and characterisations easily kept my interest along the way. I would thoroughly recommend this book, and am looking forward to the sequel.

I have read the originals many times and thus any new stories face considerable challenges in terms of being of sufficient quality to merit the moniker 'A Sherlock Holmes story'. This does not disappoint in the slightest. Good characterisation, excellent plot with a twist and narrative - what's not to like :) Only quibble is the somewhat high cost for a paperback or it would get 5 stars
