Born in 1955, a Londoner by heritage and inclination, I have been writing as long as I can remember, and have had short fiction and poetry published since 1979. Most of my fiction can loosely be categorised as fantasy / horror / weird. A steady diet of ghost stories and detective stories from an early age may account for a lot. I also sell secondhand books, and briefly edited the magazine Collector's Mart, which someone noted as the best proofread magazine in the field. I must congratulate Belanger Books because they have managed, in these two anthologies, to find writers who are almost pitch-perfect in tone for both Holmes and Watson and the occult detection genres. (This is much more difficult than you would expect as I have just reviewed very critically another mystery novel set in the late 19th century, which mingled occult aspects, but the author of which could not prevent their protagonist and on-the-right-side characters from having impeccably 21st century attitudes).

From the serious to the comic (there is one story here involving a character who reminds me very much of Professor Elemental, exponent of chap hop), from the "rational explanation after all - or is it?" to the overtly supernatural, from pre- to post-retirement, the selection of stories is excellent.

A definite recommendation for fans of ACD's work, Carnacki, and good pastiches!

This anthology is an excellent set of tales where Holmes joins forces with the great occult detectives, both the classic protagonists of the genre and more contemporary creations, to battle supernatural threats. Definitely recommended for fans of the genre and of Holmes.
