A Straight Shot.....Not Bad//Not Great

Shooter is a 2007 American action thriller film directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by Jonathan Lemkin, based on the 1993 novel Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter. The film follows Force Recon veteran Bob Lee Swagger (Mark Wahlberg), who is framed for murder by a rogue unit of personnel operating for a private military firm. The film also stars Michael Peña, Danny Glover, Kate Mara, Levon Helm, and Ned Beatty.

I guess I’ll preface this by saying I'm not really a super huge fan of “action movies” to begin with, so good luck in agreeing with my opinion I GUESS.

Now, conceptually speaking, this actually isn't a terrible movie. There's something quite alluring about the underhanded nature of the of dangers of blind patriotism that are touched on in ‘Shooter’ (Though, I may be projecting and seeing things that weren’t really there) And this preface is included without being metaphorically beaten to death by the time the conclusion is reached. in addition to this, the plot is relatively straightforward and absolutely no previous military or other related experience is needed to understand what is going on as the plot develops.

I try not to complain too much about things that seem to be grounded from reality - because, I mean, it’s a freaking movie for crying out loud - But my primary complaint about the characters and elements in this movie seem to bleed over in to inconsistencies with the novel it is based off. For one, there is a certain amount of carelessness portrayed by the characters in this movie that I would not expect any way; ‘The Shooter’ goes to great lengths to convince its audience that Mr Swagger is the “best of the best in his field,” but his willingness to bend to authority figures without investigating the legitimacy of their position beforehand seems out of place given the context in which this occurs. Secondly, the romance in this film feels so forced and is so painfully cliche that it hurts to witness. How does Mr. Swagger go from simply meeting with his dead buddy’s wife to her being referred to as “h i s w o m a n” in the span of what feels like a couple of hours??? HOOOW???? 😢😢😢😢

A las! A silver lining awaits!
Despite feeling a bit mis-casted at times, you won’t see me complaining about getting to look at Wahlberg for the entirety of two hours. Between the vignettes of Marky Mark’s arm muscles and Kate Mara’s freckles my bisexuality has been shamelessly reaffirmed.

Not a terrible movie by any means…
Just….not my particular cup of tea.

Another Wahlberg masterpiece ...

Wahlberg is Bob Lee Swagger, a sniper who lost his spotter when the government deemed them expendable rather than being caught doing an op on the wrong side of the border. He's now retired, living in a cabin in the mountains with his dog when Washington comes calling. See, Swagger is a Patriot - before and above all else - and these men know it. They need him as a fall guy. What they don't realize is that Bob Lee is also a survivor, and when their frame-up goes south, Swagger is a very dangerous enemy.

As others have said, corny, formulaic, total violence and when you look at how many 5 stars there are and the number of people who have reviewed, knowing that way more than that watched it, no wonder the country is in such a mess. A culture of people who love to watch this kind of crap. And gives license to crazy conspiracy seekers to do stupid, stupid things. I fast forwarded through, hoping to find a smidgen of actual acting, but no. First time watching a movie with Wahlberg and I won't be tuning in to any others of his. Robotic, empty, nothing here folks.

Great Action Movie, Big Guys Get Their Due

This movie fills the bill for an action movie. First deception to bait our hero. They try to kill him, but he's better. In the end he kills off the arrogant politician and operative. Our hero actually did some practice shooting on a range in Nevada to get a feel for the part. Scratches one's itch to see the top dogs taken out, it never happens in real life.

I am a fan of Mark Wahlberg's work. His work has been fun to watch as his career in film has blossomed. I loved the comedic craziness in TED and TED2, figured I'd keep watching his work. Despite some obvious tactical errors in the storyline, the execution of the role was pretty convincing. "You don't understand. These people shot my dog." That line alone made the story worth watching. Quality of the film on video is superior, the sound track is appealing and the bad guys, make you want to stand up and slap the screen. Danny Glover did a superb job of being a bad guy.

Fun movie to watch... accurate? hardly.

I wonder about these relevant expository entertaining suspense thriller movies... they seem to be a panacea for the masses...You watch one, two, twenty and maybe after you watch 30 of these kinds of "thrillers", you are satiated ... you believe it's all been handled... it was just a movie. .. Well, anyway...this is definitely entertaining. If you consider any portion of it close to factual truth, then you finally will go to sleep and believe that it's all taken care of for you... do not worry! I often get an uneasy feeling that is the purpose of a film like this. So I can't give it 5 stars for it's entertaining value. It's a "fun" movie to watch... lacks plausibility in several categories... but oddly might be about the kinds f realities that actually happen all the time... so... what is accomplished by a film like this? It will put you to will feel satisfied... From that perspective, it's a successful film. I definitely felt entertained.. I felt grateful for the ending... but as the credits rolled, I also noticed I was satiated in a way that was uncomfortable for me... Marky Mark is sure doing his job putting us to sleep.

A complicated and interesting thriller. I always enjoy Mark Wahlberg, and this is one of his better performances. The sequences involving the assassination itself, and a long-suffering, disgraced FBI agent trying to figure out how it was accomplished, are fascinating. Kate Mara is just stunning. Wish she were in more movies. Danny Glover turns in a good performance as an evil guy involved in framing Mark Wahlberg, but I always have trouble buying him as a bad guy. Well worth a rental. One of my favorite movies in this genre.

Great action movie!
Verified purchase
Wahlberg is great in this action movie about a government conspiracy to hide it's involvement in very questionable activities where many people die in the pursuit of oil. That's not the focus of this film, however. It's about attempting to blackmail an innocent Wahlberg in an assassination of a government official to further divert attention from the murders. An engaging film with many twists, great action and stunts. Not perfect. Not one Star, either. "Yes" on this film!
