Review
"This should be a well-thumbed and food-stained volume, giving parents an understanding of the concept, a friendly helping of confidence, and lots of very practical, evidence-based advice. How much more comfortable for everyone to give the littlest family member a seat at the table."―Miriam Weinstein, Author of The Surprising Power of Family Meals
"Parents have asked and Malina has delivered an easy-to-follow, fun-to-read, well-researched guide to baby-led weaning. Malina artfully combines practical advice rooted in child development with the most current recommendations on introducing allergenic foods and dealing with picky eaters. For me, the main turn off was the lack of real recipes or pictures on how the food was made. I mean, I get it, it's BLW and there is not much to show because it's so simple, but I still wanted I felt like many pages were wasted. For instance, there are many pages that are photos of random foods throughout the book. While cute, these could've been replaced with real recipes or photos of food preparation. Also, much of the information presented here could be found free on blogs or podcasts... Lastly, there's a couple of critical information missing, such as proportions (how much you should feed for what age) and feeding plans/schedules (there's only one feeding plan shown or mentioned in the book).

There are chapters which are short, to the point, evidence based: e.g. how and when to introduce different textures; how to balance the meal (protein/fruit or veg/carbs); how to encourage baby to feed herself, and when to tell she is ready for the next stage. Also a chapter on the motor development and when you can start to progress to a different portion size safely.
Before I had this book I had started to puree everything and exhaust myself by buying endless pots, putting this in the freezer, buying pouches - but I feel like I've been set free!
I have been using the book for about two weeks and this morning baby tried a bit of my boiled egg while we happily ate breakfast together (she's just six months). She is already able to pick up bits of food and feed herself.
This book has just given me the practical tools to feed my baby and managed to free up my time because now when I eat, she eats and I have actually stopped having worry about whether I have puree in the fridge - and of course it's one less thing to stress about!
Highly, highly recommend this book.
Be warned: this is NOT a recipe book - if that's what you're looking for I would recommend the traditional Annabel Karmel book (which I also have).
