I’m hooked.
Shalvis has started us with a trio of very different leading lady sisters and what appears to be a great cast of swoony heroes. You’ll understand my wording as soon as you open this book and begin reading.
Maggie’s LA life has imploded, and she and her internal conflicts have made a setting change to Lucky Harbor, Washington. Having just inherited a piece of property with her sisters, she’s anxious to create a new life and connect with her practically-a-stranger family in this picturesque seaside town.
This book has all of the elements of a great Christmas movie, including a leading man and supporting characters that you’ll want to get to know. There’s some heat, oh boy, though not too much that you won’t share the book with your mother or your daughter. Plus it also comes complete with one flawed protagonist who is self aware and works to make the changes necessary for her own happiness.
It’s heartwarming and feel good and a great start to the series. I’ve already got book 2 loaded on my Kindle and hot chocolate (recipe included in book one) waiting in my mug.
From the moment Maddie accidentally ran Jax Cullen off the road on her way into town, he was intrigued by her. Then she showed up at the bar he co-owns with a childhood friend and almost killed his bike - again. Despite her having it in for his poor motorcycle, there's something about her that tugs at him. Utterly charmed and a bit out of his element, he's floored when he finds out about her tragic past, and deeply admires the moxie she's showing to triumph over it.
Maddie quickly worms her way into Jax's head and heart, but the better he knows her, the more he dreads her finding out more about him. Jackson Cullen III has a few secrets that could threaten their budding relationship and the risk of telling them all compromises more than just his personal privacy. Some secrets just aren't his to tell. But for the sweet Maddie, struggling valiantly against her problems with intimacy and trust, those secrets just might be the death knell for any sort of lasting romance. And Jax knows that, too.
Simply Irresistible is a charming, robust romance with thoroughly likable characters. Maddie is particularly sympathetic as the middle child and the glue that holds her reluctant-to-be-held sisters together. Despite the wounds from her past relationship, which were, sadly, all too realistic, she perseveres and with a fierce will intends to get back the pieces of herself lost to cruelty. Jax has his own baggage, and his relationship with is father is lamentable. He's a genuine good guy on a grand scale, though, and his own quest to regain pieces of his soul lost to his past is well written and believable. He could have easily slipped over into too-good-to-be-true territory, but Shalvis allows for some peccadilloes in his character that keeps him from treading too far over that line. Their chemistry burns up the pages and their personalities seal the deal.
Shalvis didn't skimp on other aspects of a fantastic read, either. Secondary and ancillary characters were unique and well defined, the town of Lucky Harbor had a lot of quirky personality, and the plot had enough layers to really sink into. The aspects of the plot surrounding the three sisters and their relationships, along with their work with the bequeathed inn, reminded me of Nora Roberts in a lot of ways. Some of my favorite Nora Roberts books are the similarly-themed trilogies, so it's a favorable comparison. There was also a genuine humor and a touching poignancy in this book that enhanced the storyline and added a surprising amount of depth to the plot.
There were some small oddities in the track of the relationship between Maddie and Jax that I didn't quite follow, and the path to their HEA got a little muddled towards the end for reasons I'm not wholly certain I believed. The development had been feeling very natural and organic to the characters until some admittedly expected conflicts arose, and I'm just not completely certain those conflicts were as realistic as the rest of the storyline seemed to me. There was also one scene in particular with Maddie and a Ferris wheel that was entirely too cliched for my tastes, and the big reveal about her elder sister's secret was neither big nor particularly revealing, as that plot twist was easily observed on its approach from early on in the story.
Truly, though, those were minor issues and didn't take much away from a very enjoyable and at turns funny and heartwarming story of two people who really are much better together than apart. I'm quite pleased that the next book in this series, The Sweetest Thing (A Lucky Harbor Novel) , will be available April 1st, and have already pre-ordered it. I enjoyed the light, fun, and touching combination of style and substance that Shalvis has offered here and look forward to more.
Reviewed for One Good Book Deserves Another.
I had heard of the Lucky Harbor books before but it wasn’t until I saw one of them in a used bookstore and on sale to boot that I bought one. It was the 3rd book in the series but since they’re not that reliant on each other, I read that one first. In one sitting. I LOVED IT. So I went back and got the first. =) Lucky for you, I’ll review them in order, haha.
Maddie Moore is at a low point in her life when she drives into Lucky Harbor. She’s lost her job and her jackass boyfriend and now she doesn’t know what to do or where to go. Her mother that had been mostly absent from her life has passed away recently and has left an inn behind to her and her two half sisters, Tara and Chloe. That’s the reason she finds herself rolling into this small coastal town — and nearly running over a hot handsome man on a motorcycle. But she isn’t there for a relationship, in fact, no more men for her, EVER, she’s told herself. No matter how attractive. She instead tries to pour herself into fixing up the run-down inn to be a viable place to use instead of just selling it off like her sisters want to do.
The relationship between the sisters was one of my favorite parts!! Each of them are so very different. They’ve grown up apart from each other, with their respective dads and neither Tara nor Chloe want to be in this town longer than they have to. But Maddie wants to try and see if they could fix up the inn and make it a home. They bicker and grate on each others nerves but gradually they learn to love each other. And I love THEM. I love seeing amazing sister relationships in books! So, Maddie convinces them to give the inn a shot. By a hilarious series of events, the hottie she almost ran over turns out to be the guy she hires over the phone to help them with renovations. Jax Cullen. (Sidenote: he is the very opposite of sparkly vampires so let’s ignore that last name…)
Jax can rock a tool belt like none other and is just insanely attractive and amazing and swoony and thoughtful, protective, funny and perfect. Oh what, I’m rambling now? Jax will do that to you! He tries to woo Maddie, but having been burned badly in her last relationship, she’s understandably wary.
But I mean, seriously, not only does he rock a tool belt, he’s co-owner of a bar with his best friend and also the mayor. Okay, yeah, he’s a little TOO perfect but it all kind of works for him. And he totally worked for me. Read this and tell me you won’t go weak in the knees. *waves kindle wildy around*
Besides the insanely awesome romance that Jill Shalvis can write, I really enjoyed seeing the sisters come together and become friends. The town of Lucky Harbor is also just adorable, along with all its residents. I really want to live there because it’s just too cute! The atmosphere of the town combined with the depth of the relationships between the sisters made this a great book but the romance with JAX CULLEN bumps it up into swoony awesome amazingness. Jax pouring a drink. Jax chopping wood. Jax slinging a tool belt around. Jax kissing. These are all the things you could be a part of if you read this!
This is really a book you can just sit back and relax with. A fun romance that is just irresistible. Yeah, I went there and made that pun. Don’t judge, sometimes I think I’m punny.

Maddie Moore needs to start over, she's just gotten out of a rotten and abusive relationship in Los Angeles and lost her job. Raised by her father, she barely knew her mother and spent little time with her two half-sisters (wild child Chole and steel magnolia Tara), but an opportunity arises for her to have a new beginning. Maddie's mother passed away and left Maddie one third of an inn in the small town of Lucky Harbor, Washington. For Maddie this is a chance for a new beginning, a place where she can find her voice, but first she has to persuade her sisters that bringing the inn back to life and trying to run it is the way to go, instead of selling.
The hero of the book is Jax Cullen, he used to be a high powered and cut-throat lawyer in Seattle, but found himself slowly losing his soul to the job and so after a tragic event he decides to walk away from a world/job that meant wealth and prestige but that he was losing himself. And so Jax moved back to his home town of Lucky Harbor and began to enjoy life again. After 5 years back in his home town, Jax is starting to feel like himself but he has been hesitant to start any sort of relationship with a woman - that is until he bumps into Maddie and she very quickly gets under his skin.
Maddie was funny, clutzy, sweet and endearing - even when Jax felt he should stay away he just couldn't. The chemistry between the two sizzled off the page and had me smiling.
I was so in the mood for a book like this last night and early this morning, a book I know I'll re-read, as overall it was a delightful read.

Neither of them is looking for love, but isn’t that just the best time to find it? Maddie comes to town because she’s been left a property to share with her sisters who she barely knows, her life at home has completely fallen apart no thanks to her abusive ex-boyfriend and she needs a fresh start.
Jax is the contractor who comes on board to help her but is so much more than that, his friendship is a crutch, and it certainly doesn’t hurt that he’s hot as hell. The sparks between these two are visible from space and as much as she wants to fight it Maddie knows there’s something special about Jax.
Jill Shalvis has put plenty of laughs in this book, it’s a truly heartfelt book about family and self-discovery, and of course finding true love. I came out of this feeling like this was possibly my favourite Jill Shalvis book to date. I loved everything about this one, the difficult topics and how they were tackled, the way Maddie and Jax clicked and tackled their issues, the sisters as a unit and individually.
I’m really looking forward to reading more of the Lucky Harbor books.

Maddie isn’t having the best week. As if losing her job and breaking up with an abusive ex wasn’t bad enough – she’s now on her way to Lucky Harbor, a sleepy, coastal town to meet her estranged sisters Chloe and Tara to figure out what to do with the ramshackle old inn her mother left the threesome in her will. Oh and she almost ran over the hottest guy in town – Jax Cullen. So yeah…not the best week. As Maddie throws herself into renovating the inn despite bickering sisters and the attentions of a swoonalicious lawyer turned contractor, she discovers that sometimes happiness blossoms exactly where you weren’t looking for it.
Sometimes a girl just wants a cute, steamy fun romance to remind her that life isn’t all bad and SIMPLY IRRESISTABLE was just the tonic for me. Jill Shalvis has a style of writing that makes her books the equivalent of drinking a yummy hot chocolate curled up in front of a roaring fire. They just make you feel warm and gooey inside and you can’t help but close the book feeling light and happy.
I loved Maddie’s character and outlook on life. Despite being dealt some rough cards, she has the ability to see positivity and magic where others see hopelessness and her determination to reconnect with her sisters and honour her mother’s last wishes was admirable and sweet. The relationship between the three sisters was definitely the highlight for me, being the youngest of three, I could recognise a lot of the roles sisters tend to play when they are together and that unique and special dynamic only they can have with each other. Their personalities and differences definitely shone in this book and I’m so eager to continue with this series and read Tara and Chloe’s books!
Despite the cute and light theme of the book, Shalvis doesn’t shy away from heavier, emotional issues which was great and really added a depth I wouldn’t have thought would be present in a book like this.
The description of the town itself was another highlight and really makes me ache to find a real-life Lucky Harbor. It has a very Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls feel to the place, with warm characters who know everything about everybody, small businesses that support each other and a real community.
Of course we can’t forget the romance. Shalvis knows how to write heroes worthy of all the swoons and Jax was no exception. I loved how caring and sweet he was while being the Alpha male without the added arrogance. His connection with Maddie was wonderful and I loved their moments together, both steamy and hilarious.
It’s interesting considering I complain about insta-love a lot, how romance-centric books like this where the characters fall for each other within days/weeks don’t bother me. Does anyone else feel like this?
I think I’ve waxed lyrical enough about how much I adored this book and cannot wait to read more of this series!
Utterly romantic with warm, likeable characters and a great storyline,
SIMPLY IRRESISTABLE was a hit!

So this book is basically as cheesy and cliché as any other romance novel I've ever read but I have to say I really loved it. There was something so honest and lovely about Maddie, I could really find myself liking her a lot. I loved her growing relationship with her sisters and seeing them bond and become closer to each other throughout the story was really nice to read.
And Jax. Oh..my..god. Can he be my new book boyfriend please? Or more like manfriend because Jax ladies and gentlemen, is all man. He was clever, strong, fit, kind, generous and understanding. Literally perfect. Like PERFECT! And that should annoy me because it's so unrealistic but I couldn't help but fall in love with Jax at the same time as Maddie. There was so many great chemistry-laden scenes between Maddie and Jax that left me feeling a bit breathless. The sex scenes were feisty in a classy way and oh so spicy.
There were definite annoying parts where Maddie and Jax seemed to circle each other around the same problems and repeat their arguments. While Maddie's past was definitely worth her feelings about men, I felt like it was repeated enough to start being irritating which I didn't like feeling about such an issue. I don't think the very dramatic fire scene had to happen either. It felt a bit unnecessary.
Overall I loved the story, the romance and the introduction to the town and its people. I'll definitely be continuing with this series.

With so many characters involved, you'd think the author could entertain a reader. Instead, the story shuffels forward and stalls repeatedly.
Sorry to say it, as this is the worst thing I can possibly say, I was bored.
