About the author

Maya Hughes, that's me!, can often be found sneaking in another chapter while hiding in the bathroom from her kids! :-) I’m a romance writer who loves taking inspiration from everyday life, namely my husband and biggest fan. Inspiration also strikes when I hear a song, meet someone new or daydream while at soccer practice.
I’m the mom of three little ones, the wife to an amazing husband and also work full time. Some of my favorite things are cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, white wine, laughing until I can’t breathe, traveling with my family and Jeff Goldblum.

The writing is superb & I was so invested in Keyton (Dare) & Bay rekindling their relationship from high school. What was broken then, Bay knew was going to take a lot of work to fix now. Those issues had seemed to have been fixed, but it now seemed that these two relied on each other too much to succeed and survive.
Bay was his calm in the storm, & Keyton was her courage in the face of her difficulties. It’s fine to be that extra push for each other, but not ok when they relied so heavily on each other to fix each other.
Another whirlwind short lived relationship for these two ended in even more heartbreak than before.
Will they be able to come out victorious in the third installment? I sure hope so!! Because both of them deserve all the happiness that they aren’t allowing themselves to have.
High school 1st loves surprisingly reconnect after 4 years of not seeing eachother.
She needs the world around her to see her.
Dare just wants her to see the real him.
She needs to be important, hes afraid he isnt enough.
Spoilers and ranting
Hes just been drafted and willing to risk his future for a second chance.
Shes afraid of what she really wants and headed toward a safe stable life when he pops back up and she realizes she can use him to get what she wants.
Big problem, from the very beginning back in high school shes set them up to fail. Shes never had faith in him. 1st that he was playing her. Then that she would be in his shadow and now that it's all just a mask waiting to slip again
She has no faith in herself. For some reason she really wants to be seen. In high school she felt invisible always as the new girl but didnt try to change that or get to know people. Then she thinks shes easily forgotten. And with her music she can only sing infront of dare because he sees her but her best friend and work friends have confidence in her but she doesnt trust it and is insecure.
4 years later and bay is still immature. She has every right to be mad, hurt and upset but the fact that she still doesnt acknowledge what she did to him speaks volumes. The song may have been about her learning things from what he went through but she still put what he went through out there. And it was still raw for him. She feels pity for herself because everyone was talking about her after but she doesnt stop to think about how the talking affected dare. She never wanted anyone to know her business but she put all his out there. I wish someone would shake her and ask how she would like it if dare went out and told hundreds of people how she felt about losing her dad, the one thing that gets her the most. Because singing to hundreds of people about his abuse and it doesnt faze her.
And she furthers her pity party by being upset about people leaving her behind when in fact shes the once that chose a career she doesnt care for and is choosing to leave her current job and chosing to move. Shes the one leaving, but of course she sees it as poor her because people arent trying to make special accommodation for her at a work event months in the future when shes suppose to be gone. And then she throws it at dare that hes getting to live his dream when shes the one willing to give up on hers.
The more I read the more I dont understand them being together. I get that they are drawn to one another but beyond that it doesnt work. She doesnt accept him for him. He has an anger issue but it isnt out of control and she always uses it as an excuse. Shes never been ready for him. Shes never wanted a label shes always said it was to fast. He always shies away from his true feeling because he can she them scaring her away.
So she cant be there for him all the time, be the one to calm him down, be his life BUT she wanted him to be by her side so she could sing because she thought she couldn't do it without him. So he can be there so she can have her dream but she cant be there for him.
Okay so we pick up right where we left off in the first book. Bay has certainly not grown any less hostile towards Dare/Keyton and Keyton has literally spent the last 4 years pining away for Bay and trying to fix what he broke (see Fulton U series for more on this). I would literally fight someone for Keyton in this book. I know he doesn't need my protection because he's got it covered but my God I would do it anyway. Bay finds that unfortunately Keyton still holds the keys to her song bird's cage and she is no closer to working through her music based anxiety than she was before. These two reluctantly fall back into a hot and heavy relationship trying their best to prove to each other that maybe this time is different. They have four years of growth and changes. Maybe this is their time? When Bay is presented with a career defining opportunity she can't turn down and Keyton makes a possible career ending mistake showing that his past still defines him hard choices have to be made for the sake of both of their futures.
If you do read this series and struggle after this book know that I get you. I was in the same place. This book will do things to your feelings and will likely make you feel angry maybe even a little betrayed. That's okay. Live in that for a minute and know your feelings are valid and they are coming from a place of Maya making you feel intensely strong about two fictional characters. That is an impressive skill that should be admired. Then you should immediately pick up the last book and feel joy in your soul again. If you think this sounds like too much for you then please don't torment yourself. There is nothing worse than reading a book that wasn't meant for you in the first place and making yourself or the author feel bad. This review is my fair warning to you. If you continue from here prepare to feel all the feels and thank me later.
