“Sinister Summer” is heavily paranormal: ghosts, tarot cards, a protagonist with intuition-squared, townspeople who accept/expect the paranormal, plus cats with super-heightened senses for the paranormal.
There is also a languid cozy hanging from the paranormal romance plot line. The setting is a small, picturesque town near Lake Michigan, and it’s populated with idiosyncratic citizens. A recurring side story is about a group of feisty senior-women who gather for lunch, tea, & gossip. This is a cozy, so they’re in on the action.
This “mystery” lacks forensics but has an un-autopsied death, a few interactions with police, several home break-ins, and arson. There are few red herrings or clues for mystery aficionados. One culprit is obvious, but the other pops up in exposition.
There’s some NSFW language, but nothing outrageous. No God’s name in vain. There are a few grammar, punctuation and homonym errors, but nothing egregious.
This was the first book in the Wicks Hollow series and it was one fabulous read. I really enjoyed getting to know the various characters and the town. The book was well-written with well-rounded and sometimes quirky characters. The mystery will keep you guessing as the story pulls you in. I did want more definitive answers at the end which seemed a bit abrupt to me, but maybe those answers will be in the next book which I'm looking forward to. I do recommend this book.
I get where she was coming from with that, actually, because she's the type of person who doesn't (normally) jump into things. She has to let them percolate for a while before making a decision on what to do, but I REALLY didn't like him.
For the record, Diana did grow on me. You know, once she started to unbend a little around Ethan and accept that maybe there are things out in the world that can't be explained with hard facts. With the mysterious happenings she starts experiencing at her house, she definitely takes a hard left and begins believing that the impossible can be possible.
There's a mystery, a romance, a douche-y boyfriend, and a quirky town full of quirky residents. I must say I ended up liking Wicks Hollow and the supernatural shenanigans that were hinted at.

However, I can certainly recommend the book if you want to get lost into a book for a few hours. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!
Totally in love with this book, it's a wonderful story filled with mystery, secrets and some sadness, but most of all great charcters, the story really had me giggling away to my self at some part, I could imagine being sat in the room with some of the character and feel the tention, love and humor between them.
The story had me gripped from the start, and has some good twists, although the story starts with a very sad death and a horrible secret that has came to light, the story continues on to become a fabulous life changing experience filled with new love, friendship and community spirit (pun intended) but also make you think about your own family and friends that you may not have spoken to in a while.
I have just downloaded the next book in the set, and can't wait to read the other books to follow in this series.
If you love suspense, romance, supernatural hauntings and a good mystery then this book will not disappoint
