About the Author

Scott lives with his husband Mark in a yellow bungalow in Sacramento. He was indoctrinated into fantasy and sci fi by his mother at the tender age of nine. He devoured her library, but as he grew up, he wondered where all the people like him were. He decided that if there weren't queer characters in his favorite genres, he would remake them to his own ends. A Rainbow Award winning author, he runs Queer Sci Fi, QueeRomance Ink, and Other Worlds Ink with Mark, sites that celebrate fiction reflecting queer reality, and is a full member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA).

Scott inhabits the space between the "here and now" and the "what could be". He was shepherded into his love affair with fantasy and sci fi by his mother at the tender age of nine, and soon read her entire library. But as he grew up and read more, he wondered where all the gays were.

He came out as gay at 23, and decided to create the stories he couldn't find at his local bookstore. He reimagined his favorite genres, subverting them and remaking them to his own ends with a universe of diverse characters. And every now and then he hopes someone finds and enjoys them.

His friends say Scott's mind works a little differently - he sees connections between things that many people miss, and accomplishes more in a day than many people do in three.

Scott's fiction subverts expectations and transforms traditional science fiction, fantasy, and contemporary life into something fresh and unexpected. He manages both Queer Sci Fi and QueeRomance Ink with his husband Mark to promote and celebrate fiction that reflects their worldview, and is an associate member of the Science Fiction Writer's Association (SFWA).

He infuses his work with love, beauty and power, making them soar, and hopes they will change the world, just a little.

Scott was recognized as one of the top new gay authors in the 2017 Rainbow Awards, and his debut novel "Skythane" received two awards and an honorable mention.

Scott lives with his husband of 25 years in Sacramento, California, in a small yellow house with two pink flamingoes in front.

The start of what looks to be a very exciting adventure

This book is nonstop action from page 1 and I just couldn’t put it down. Although it takes place on another planet, it does read as more fantasy than Sci-fi and there’s absolutely bananas good worldbuilding to go along with it. With a centuries old prophecy that our MCs are at the heart of, but know nothing about, their world is thrown into absolute chaos from the start and we get to be along for the ride. The romance seems quick and the MCs seem to fall without really knowing each other, but that is also explained in a unique and intriguing way. Definitely a book that makes you want to have book 2 queued up as it ends in such a way that you can’t possibly be expected to wait to find what happens next. With such an interesting world, and so many twists, turns, and secrets, this book is a start to what I think will be a very exciting adventure

I want to thank J. Scott Coatsworth for the opportunity to read the newly re-released version of Skythane (The Oberon Cycle, #1). Although I am thankful for the opportunity to read this book for free, my review has not been impacted by this generosity.

Jameson Havercamp showed up on Oberon to investigate a drug shortage for OberCorp. Jameson isn't exactly sure why he received this duty as a psych (basically a psychologist). His counterpart on the ground is a man named Xander Kinnson who is a native of Oberon. Of course, it's easy to tell he's a native of Oberon because of Xander's black wings. The first generation of humans to inhabit Oberon had altered their genetics to grow wings because of the planet's climate. Of course, the second generation of "landers" are not as keen as the first generation. So, right from the beginning, the book is dealing with some interesting class issues.

Jameson comes from a Christianist planet, which basically is highly religious and Puritanical in their approach to life and is ready to get home and get married. What he didn't expect was his immense attraction to Xander.

Of course, as with most stories, there is a lot more going on underneath the surface and you quickly realize that the collision of Jameson and Xander's worlds is not by accident. In fact, their future has been dictated for more than 25 years, unbeknownst to either of them.

Overall, I found this book really fun. I ended up getting the second book in the series just to see where this series takes us.

Reading this book reminded why I enjoy science fiction. It has great world building with lots of action and adventure. There are moments of drama, laughter and tears. Something for everyone. I would like to say that, to me, this book is much more sci-fi than romance. The romantic pairings are gay and lesbian which, as a lesbian, I was happy to read. I don't know how it is within the science fiction genre but many romance authors provide trigger warnings for possibly triggering content. While the child sexual abuse was off-page it could still cause problems for some readers. That being said, I would definitely recommend to those looking for science fiction with GLBTQ main characters. And anyone else who enjoys well written and edited fiiction. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series. When will Robyn and Quince be reunited? Will Alix find his way to his lover?

Solid Beginning 3.5 stars

I usually like more fantasy and less sci-fy but I was totally able to get behind this one. The world building was solid and the explanations good. Normally, I find sci-fy a bit dry and technical in the details but the details behind the world/s was explained well...not too technical and not dumbed down. The characters were interesting and the pace was decent. While I liked Jameson and Xander, I thought the most compelling character was Morgan. Most of the characters had a decent amount of depth but I would've liked to have seen more development with Jameson and Xander's relationship. It felt a bit "fated" to me but still worked within the context of the story. This book sets itself up nicely for the next one while still feeling complete. If sci-fy is your thing, I think you'd really enjoy this.

Exciting start to sci fi adventure

First in series (Oberon Cycle). Science fiction/fantasy adventure. Close proximity. Romance is very much secondary to story, slow burn. Xander and Jameson are thrown together on the planet of Oberon in order to look into the production of the drug Pith. However, they are really brought together for a much larger purpose and have to make a journey to save the planet while escaping and fighting some opposition. There is a lot going on in the story, it held my attention with decent world building and continuing action. I do wish there was more intimacy/relationship building between Xander and Jameson, however, you do get their background stories and I’m guessing the relationship builds over the series. Sounds like a big adventure is coming for the characters as the series continues.

I really enjoyed this book. It was really unique and entertaining. The world building was great. I loved the characters and the mysterious Morgan. I adored Morgan. It was a nice change of pace from the normal romance I read. The romance is secondary in this book. There is some kissing, but anything more is off page. There is a good amount of action in this book. I'd say this book was more fantasy than sci-fi, but I love both genres, so that wasn't an issue for me. I can't wait to get my hands on the second book!
