What did I just watch?!

This movie really is fantastic. You have to like dark humor mixed with drama and sadness. I was constantly laughing at the absurdity. The viewer is taken on a journey with the main character who is seriously mentally ill and along the way, is introduced to the cast of characters battling their own way through life. There is so much to contemplate. There's a really powerful message in this film. It's gritty, raw, uncomfortable, and really strange. It's not suitable for children or maybe anyone really but if it's your kind of movie it's a major find! It's kind of like Napoleon Dynamite on crack. The acting is just superb. Watch it, if you hate it oh well. If you love it, you're welcome.

So many decent actors in this movie and all I can say is what a waste. This movie is pointless. Absolutely worthless. I wasn't aware of Matt Lucas before watching this bio-hazard of screentime, (and to be honest I only decided to give it a shot because I saw Billy Crystal and James Cahn were in it) but I will never ever watch another movie with Matt Lucas in the cast. I'm talking never, ever, ever, ever, ever. Like, I don't have a fear of clowns or get freaked out by clowns. Right? So I could never truly relate with people who actually suffer from coulrophobia that are terrified by clowns. But now I get. I now understand and empathize with all my heart. After watching Lucas stroll around in those tighty whities for the majority of this flick, I so totally get it. You have no idea how badly I want to scrub my memory bank with a brillo pad. If losing every single memory in my entire life of my late sweet beloved mother was the price I had to pay to get that abominable vision out of my head, I'd take that deal lickity-split! And I'm Catholic!! Seriously though, I look forward to having nightmares for quite, some, time.

: ) Dark comedy, just the right shade.

This show has quite a few well-known acters in it despite the fact it seems more like a weird B movie which would attract big stars. Many time when I see a famous acter lowering him/her self to this, I think there must be issues that require some easy cash. However, this movie even though it has a very simple plot and could have turned out to be a sad, depresing misteke, turned out to be twisted and surprisingly funny. It's very dark and looks at the life lived by people who are not "living the dream", but only living" Just getting by. Not homeless, ......... yet. Not people we typically care to watch, talk to, or even know about. But is you think about it, the really interesting stories are mostly about people like these. Making unrealistic, crazy decisions that sometimes make you shake your head and wonder. Much more interesting than the bubble butts with plastic faces cable TV thinks we should watch.

I discovered this movie by searching for films with Rebel Wilson in Prime videos, which is to say that I don't usually look in this genre. Rebel aside, I was put off by this movie initially, but then was quickly drawn into the dark humor, interesting plot line and character development. Every person was deeply flawed, and portrayed in a very real way. There were no beautiful people doing beautiful things that we might want to identify with. Instead we are invited to acknowledge our human condition and be reminded that things are not always as we might assume.

Reminds me of being 18 with no place to live

I loved this movie! I could only live in a cheap, wacky apt bldg when I first lived on my own. My neighbor was a large man that dressed in negligees and wigs at night and he had a great relationship with a couple of mannequins that he dressed up everyday. The managers were an alcoholic couple. One of the tenants yelled at night, (I never knew why. He lived alone). Everyone dealing with their problems and trying to get through another day. None of us asked to be born and we didn’t get to choose our families, but here we are in this screwy world of small apartments. I loved the unique characters in this movie, and I loved the way it worked out for most of the characters. So nice to see a movie that’s so unique.

Matt Lucas Is A Very Funny Man
Verified purchase
I saw Matt Lucas with The Doctor and he was a good companion but in Small Apartments he is a SCREAM! The rest of the cast is excellent. Billy Crystal does a character bit as a drunk detective. James Caan does a character bit as an artist. Saffron Burrows, Johnny Knoxville, Rebel Wilson, James Marsden, Amanda Plummer, Rosie Perez in some kind of weird wig... Man, why haven't you seen this already? In fact, there, I give it 5 Stars. Don't worry about the plot, Matt Lucas is a very funny man.

Matt Lucas is the most disturbing looking character since Divine in Pink Flamingos - only this is how he really looks. The film reminded me of "The Dark Backward" in creating a ghastly, nightmarish world nobody would ever want to live in, and yet it is only slightly removed from our real world. For both films I wondered aloud, "what the heck is James Caan thinking? Does he never want to work again?" - but I loved that he was in both. I liked this movie because the funny parts weren't funny and the serious parts were funny. In my mind that's quite an accomplishment. I may be the only one who laughed during Johnny Knoxville's death scene.

Very strange movie but it really kept my attention. Odd little story about a really run down "hotel" where some bizarre characters live. I don't want to give too much away but it involves an old painter, a pot-head convenience store clerk, a young girl trying to get away, a bald heavy, pale man-child in his tighty whities and a dead landlord. Did I mention the drunken fire inspector? the acting is superb, the cast is amazingly strong. The man in his underwear matt Lucas is scary at times, just look at him! The cast for this small indie film....WOW....Billy Crystal, James Caan, Johnny Knoxville (wonderful), James Marsden, Dolph Lundgren and more surprises, too.
