Liam Hoffen and Nick James have returned from their last encounter grateful to be alive, but wondering how they will continue. Sterra's Gift is nothing more than a broken heap, strapped to a pile of ore. Shopping for a new ship is disappointing. Nothing can replace her, until a crazy old man introduces them to an old British warship named Hotspur.
News of Red Houzi attacks near their home spurs them into action and they set off in a desperate race to save their families. When a massive pirate fleet shows up, they discover they're impossibly outgunned and outnumbered. It always comes down to friends, family, and a sense of purpose. This crew has all of that and more.

About the author

Jamie McFarlane is a graduate of Colorado School of Mines with a Master of Science in Mathematics. An avid reader, tinkerer, woodworker and metal sculptor, Jamie is just as likely to be seen smelting aluminum cans in his garage as he is tacking random, discarded iron objects into a small army of beasties that adorn his home’s landscaping.
Jamie’s writing career began as something of a dare which later turned into a tribute. In his late teens, Jamie was well known as the family story-teller, spinning fanciful yarns about ordinary events, usually with the objective of escaping well-deserved trouble. One day, his mother, often the target of his mischievous tales, challenged him to commit his words to writing. Jamie promised he would but time passed, as did his beloved mother. In 2014, Jamie made good on his promise and published his first book.
Jamie is the author of a growing library of novels and novellas including the space opera series - Privateer Tales, and the urban fantasy series - Witchy World. Jamie lives in Lincoln, Nebraska with his wife and enjoys spending time with family and friends.

I particularly like the manipulation of very localized gravity for various reasons. An upside-down workout area is a clever construct if you ask me.
But it is the characters that we keep coming back to spend time with. Liam and his friends are good people to hang out with. Sure they are young, and McFarlane takes time to develop their thoughts and action from that base place of youth, innocence, and naivete. They are so accomplished that we can easily forget that they are just past their high school years. In other societies, they would have decades to go to reach the place in life where they could captain a ship. Not so with these belter kids, raised in space. They do what needs to be done because they grew up doing what needed to be done, kids or not.
The science seems solid to me, the social world seems solid to me and I like the characters very much.
What is the next one in the series?
Coming home to their family all waiting with a huge picnic spread, it's time for a break.
I can't wait to see what they're off to next!
I am so happy that the author sent me the first book in the series, Rookie Privateer, to get me started on this series!
The pirates have plans of their own, and they include more than an annoying band of privateers. They plan to take out the Mars navy fleet, and Liam's girlfriend is in it. Loose Nuts is, once again, squarely in the middle of the approaching doom. They need every trick they can muster to win this battle, and it may mean trusting someone who wants Liam dead.
Number six in Jamie McFarlane's Rookie Privateer series, brings more of what we love. Lots of action and space battles. Way back in book one, the relationship between Liam and Tabby is set up, and we haven't seen the two get together much. This book changes all that. Tabby rejoins our fearless pirate fighters and is a welcome addition to the team. Three cheers for our rookie privateers!
I find the series very entertaining. Liam is maturing and his relationship with Tabby developing. The whole crew Nick, Marny, Jack, Tali, Celina and the folks just play off of each other so well. The adventures are real and this is a crew you just grow to like.
Keep them coming. I am having a great time.
