Author's Note:
The Sneaker's Handbook is a 12,000 word companion piece to The Day Soldiers Trilogy (Day Soldiers, Purging Fires, and Topia). It's presented as if it were written by the "Information Division" of the Day Soldiers. Start to finish, it never breaks that reality.
It was written because you, the readers, requested it.
If you've already read the Day Soldiers novels, this manual is a fun companion to that series. If you haven't read Day Soldiers, this manual is a great introduction to that world.
Continuity Note:
This is the handbook issued to Lily Baxter the day she joined The Day Soldiers. In the novels Day Soldiers, Purging Fires and Topia, humanity learns many new things about the Legion. In the interest of avoiding major spoilers, this is the manual issued to Day Soldiers before the events of those novels.
...
Our ignorance is their greatest weapon.
You've finally had enough. You've finally decided you can't stomach the news reports of people being imprisoned by vampires and towns being decimated by werewolves. You've finally decided to join The War Against the Darkness.
You joined the Day Soldiers and were assigned to the Sneakers Division.
This manual is the first step in your journey to becoming a Day Soldier. From a brief history of the war to survival tips for fighting vampires and werewolves, The Sneaker's Handbook prepares all new recruits for their upcoming training.
Welcome to the Day Soldiers.

From the Author
I have a personal rule about trying my best to give readers a voice in regards to the books I write, so I posted a poll asking if fans of Day Soldiers would want a Day Soldiers manual. I received several answers, both on the post and in direct messages. The answer was an overwhelming "Yes."
Because of this, I put my current project aside and wrote this manual. It was written because you requested it. It's my way of saying, "Thanks for the support" and to let you know that I do listen to your suggestions. I sincerely hope you enjoy it.

To start, I actually read this book before starting to read the Day Soldiers Trilogy (which is fantastic by the way) and found this to be a short but fun diversion to get myself ready for the first book. The primary issue is that much of its content can be obtained after reading the first couple of chapters in the Day Soldiers. There are even sections that are word for word transplanted over--granted these are fictional 'historical documents' that are being replicated, so there's some leeway there.
By itself it was fun, but seemed to be holding back. As a manual it could've used rudimentary black/white illustrations for the tools of a Day Soldier and maybe the anatomy of the enemies described (vampires and werewolves). Being in-universe style, there also should've been more tips for survival/fighting the undead that were specific and given in detail. As it is, the information is very general, and an overview of what anyone whose read any of the books already knows.
For the price, complaints make very little sense. My 'constructive criticism' may just be beyond the scope and intention of the book. Either way, it's well worth the cost, and I would buy it again even as it is now. However, there is something to say for what could have been. I'm hoping for a revised second edition. Fingers crossed.
